How she didn't get the Oscar for the picture is a wonder to me. Excellent film, great actors, and Ross is a knockout. Music and costumes are fantastic. This is one for your collection.

Lady sings the blues ( should have won best actress)

Diana Rosses award ( but didnot win) winning preformance in this movie portraing Billie Holliday was a movie to never forget. ZI can still after all these years hear her with that voice, that melts your soul. I believe this was her firts time out on the big screen, and she should have won every awar that year for this movie, but that was then, and this is now. what a shame. Billy Dee Williams was also a stand out up and coming star when this movie was made. . its a true treasure and I invite everyone to enjoy this film the way that I did. a++++++

Ross reeks in this stinky vanity film! Egad it's awful!

Diana Ross is no actress, and this movie proves it!
She rolls her eyes, wears a fright-wig, and dons some gorgous gowns, but that does not make her an actress.
Stick to listening to old Supremes records and avoid this movie like the plague!

Review created: 05/07/09

I love this movie I had seen it years ago and bought here on ebay to be able to watch it again after a friend had overdosed on heroin and I remembered how great this movie was.

For anyone who has someone whois addicted to heroin this movie should be givin' to them to watch. It shows what a drug like that can do to someones life and Diana Ross Played a great Role in this movie And Of course Bill Dee Williams is always great any any movie he plays in. This was a great combination and I just absolutely Loved it!

  Call Her Miss Holiday
Review created: 02/16/09
by:

Diana Ross has about as much in common with Billie Holiday as George W. Bush has with intelligence!

That being said, the thin ebony glamazon knocks the stuffing out of this tale of rape, drugs and pain.

While Diana does "gloss" Billie, she's also raw and very very moving in her portrayal of Lady Day. She can really freeze your blood with her pathos during the withdrawal scenes in the woman's prison, and almost have you believing that the ghost of Billie resides in her when she croons her version of Billie's great melodies on the soundtrack.

This picture holds up over thirty years after it's theatrical release, and still serves as a glimpse into the harrowing life, a life that created the greatest blues singer of all time.

"Egad"? Lady, get with it! You couldn't write a review if Roger Ebert handed it to you! The movie was a money maker for Ross. Do you think she cares what YOU think? Do you think anyone cares what YOU think? The movie was a bomb when it came out what made you think the DVD version would be any better? Go have a quiet talk with Marilyn, maybe she can help you.

  Stunning! Incredible Musical Performance
Review created: 06/20/08
by:

All the critics noted, Lady Sings The Blues was loosely based on Billie Holiday. But Diana Ross captured the essence of all those beautiful songs and her acting along with the whole ensemble was incredible. The score was both sad and romantic. This is in my top ten for favorite movies of all time. There is nothing to dislike about this movie, it's hauntingly beautiful.

This is a favorite of mine, it first came out when I was much younger. That acting is excellent and the story is a story that is still going on only it has become so epidemic in the world we live in today. So sad yet so real the ending was hard to take, makes me mad. The love they had between the two of them was so loving and they seem so good together until their addiction (Billy Holiday and Piano Man). Must see movie for all.

  My favorite movie, love it.
Review created: 03/06/07

I've seen this movie more than any other movie in my life. I saw where it was going to be on TV, and I thought I should but it to avoid the advertisements.
I got the brand new DVD still sealed in the box and have enjoyed it a few more times since receiving it. I can't believe I didn't but it sooner, and I also
got the CD, to enjoy in my car.

  Lady Sings The Blues DVD
Review created: 10/01/06

This classic movie has finally come to DVD and it's really worth the wait! The film itself is amazing, and it's a great addition to anyone's DVD collection. Diana Ross, (who had never acted before and had no formal training), gave a performance that got her an oscar nomination (which she truely deserved)! Instead of imitating the legendary Billie Holiday, Ms. Ross took the essence of her charactor and made it her own.The film also helped establish Billy Dee Williams as a sexy leading man.
Richard Pryor gave a brilliant dramatic performance as "Piano man", and proved he too had incredible range as an artist, in this touching role as Billie's good friend.
The special features interview section of this DVD is a real treat! Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams, and Suzanne De Passe (along with others), talk candidly about the making of this film and reveal very interesting facts about the process. They discuss the importance of Barry Gordy's vision and determination to make a quality historically relevent drama, at a time when "Blaxplotation" films were the norm. The film is accompanied by a fabulous sound track of jazz classics, made famous by Ms. Holiday and beautifully sung by Diana Ross.
Now perceived as ahead of it's time, "Lady Sings The Blues" chronicles the icon Billie Holiday and offers tour de force performances by a great cast! They tell her tragic story with dignity and brilliance! Thank god Barry Gordy had the resources to get this movie to the big screen! For me this is a must have DVD.

I love this MOVie. I loved it at the Drive-In back in the Seventies! This is a wonderful film about Billy Holiday. Diana Ross should have won the Academy Award for this one. Since owning it on VHS and now this DVD, I've seen this film about 200 times! You will not be disappointed.

This is an excellent movie portrayal of Black Love. It may not be historically accurate at times, but Diana Ross is wonderful in the role of Billie Holiday.
