I bought this novel for my book group. I liked the descriptions of the history of lace; nuances of lace making. I felt the plot confusing. The book reminded me of several, involving twins, dysfunctional families and "nutty," relatives. I did not like this novel.

An interesting view of Salem Witches & Readers

A very unique insight into the paranormallacies in the modern day Salem, Mass.. This book started out kinda slow and at first I was a little dissappointed and at times confused but by the middle leading to the end it all came together nicely. A good story and never "hokey" but not quite my cup of tea (leaves). I am more of a Stephen King / Anne Rice type and this is nothing quite as intense.

This is a grand tale of strong women, women with a vaiety of strengths and failings. Mental issues addressed and abound. After a few days of this book dancing in my head, I reread it, then passed it on.Loved the details of the gardens, the lace and human frailty,

This book was a selection for our book discussion group. The story opens by the narrator telling us that she is a liar and goes on with her story. That leaves you wondering what she's lying about and if any of this story is true.

I was a bit confused by the relationship of the characters and found out during the discussion that I wasn't the only one. I also had trouble finding a character that I liked. The protagonist is usually a likable character and if not, there is someone else who gains your sympathy and affection. Not so in this one. Many of us felt there wasn't a single character we felt any kinship with.

That being said, it's worth reading and the twist in the end with have you smacking your head and wondering why you didn't see that one coming.

This is a book that keeps you guessing until the very end. But not only that it also transports you to Salem MA. You feel like you are walking the streets and seeing the same things as the characters in the book be. Highly reccommend this read.

It is a great book! I am going to be visiting Salem Mass for Halloween 2009. Since I'm from the West coast I wanted to "visit"places associated with Salem but with a twist, so I chose this book and all the attractions referred in the story line!.. Great book and it will be fun to visit the Historical places but now I'll think about them as the bood referres to them!

An interesting read. Would definitely appeal more to women than to men. Would make a good gift for a woman, especially those interested in the paranormal or psychicsm. The protagonist could use a bit of work...I felt like I was listening to a friend who smokes a bit too much pot and forgot to take their Paxil throughout the novel, but overall the interesting story makes for a good read. Would recommend to another female.

I also felt the portrayal of Salem, Mass in the book was very accurate, and described not only the weird tourists who go there (the reason to avoid it,) but also the great beauty and lovely old homes there, as well as the character of the residents of the town. May appeal to those who are familiar with Salem, or those familiar with the nearby towns suchas those on Cape Anne.

This book arrived in great condition, actaully brand new, and only a few days after I ordered it. Unfortunately, it was also at Costco for the same price the next week. Still, buying books on ebay and half.com has saved me a lot of money. Thanks
