LG RC199H DVD Recorder / VCR Combo

I bought this unit about six months ago. It won't recognize a disk anymore. A number of owners have complained about the exact same problem. It's a $225.00 lesson not to buy LG products.

This unit is great because I can transfer my VHS on to DVD with ease and save space while upgrading picture quality.

This player worked for me for about 11 months, now it won't read a disc, and from reading on the net, it seems all of these players, have the same problem. I paid $300 for this nice door stopper, hope you don't do the same. Will have a hard time buying another LG product, if there is a class action suit I would like to be involved in it. I really feel ripped off my LG.

I have worked with lot of Dvd Recorder and this model is very easy to use. Instructions are simple and easy to follow. I have recorded about 20 dvds and the quality is very good. This is a recomanded product for any one.

I love this player because it is all i wanted in a player .Like i can record my home movies i made on my cam recorder that has VCS and now i can put it on disks.And i heard from allot of people that LG makes the best DVD Recorder / VCR Combo. And i decide to buy it because it seem it did'nt have much problems with it so that is why i brought it.

WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR? THE ITEM WORKS GREAT FOR ME. YOU GET BOTH A DVD RECORDER AND VCR IN ONE UNIT. IN ADDITION, YOU RECEIVE 480P, 720P, OR 1080I UPCONVERT ABILITY.

I have two of these recorders and have not had any problems with either one.
They do seem to work better with DVD+R than the DVD-R.
You do have to format the +R, but it only takes about one minute.
I like the way the recorder works. For example, everytime you hit the
record button, it only increases the recording time by 10 minutes. This is
a great feature, especially if you are going to "dub" VCR tapes and want to
put two tapes on one DVD. You of course, would have to use the 4 hour recording mode. (i.e. LP) The LP mode is good enough for VCR tapes. Also by having two of these machines, I can use S-video out and in connections to dub the DVD's.

I am disappointed that the remote control was not included. Otherwise, I am happy with the item and the delivery was on time.

This DVD/VCR really sucks ass! it worked fine and looked great for a short time. I've hardly used the thing... and it started with intermittent playback issues, no it wont load anything. I would like to mail to the president of the company in a box stained with my urine, just see how he likes it.

what a waste of time and money.

WE bought this Oct. 08. The recorder didn't word right so I called Toshiba. They sent a dvd that was suppose to fix the problem. WEll the dvd that was sent didn't work so I brought it back 1/09 to Best buy where it was bought. They only had a 90 day labor warranty and we were 2 days past so they wanted to charge us $83 FOR SOMETHING THAT NEVER WORKED RIGHT. It didn't matter we called the maker and had to wait for the DVD. Bad product, Bad COmpany and won't buy from Best buy again.

This may seem like a good system at the beginning but it's going to wear down within a year. I kid you not. It will stop reading the disk and that will be the end of it. My unit was slowly wearing out and I couldn't tell what was really going on until it died, took less than a year. My recommendation is to choose a well-known brand, something you are familiar with. LG is not recommended because of poor life-span. That's why they sell so cheap on ebay. If you have purchased one already, JUST WAIT AWHILE! If you are considering a purchase, RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!

Unit will read some DVD's, not all and it doesn't matter if it is a factory made DVD or a copied one. This recorder takes longer than average to recognize DVD's. Unit well designed, has some good features, example: up-convert to 1080i, has built in tuner( maybe useless after Feb 2009) I bought this unit because of it's styling and features.

I needed this item to have an ATSC Digital Tuner as described in the listing. The item did not have a digital tuner and therefore I could not use it as intended.

This is a very nice looking unit. The ease of use is fairly simple. It also has the built in tuner. The picture quality thru the tuner of this unit is awesome. The dubbing feature is very easy to use. The recording quality on a dvd recorder is excellent. So far the DVD player has played back all but one of my store bought DVD's. The users manual says it will use all formats of blank dvd's but it will not use any of the lesser expensive -R or -RW formats. The +R and +RW of any brand seem to work great. I read somewhere that it will use the -R and -RW but it must the the high-end brand of which I have not purchased to try. Just save yourself any grief and stay with the +R or +RW and you will be very satisfied. Overall I would recommend this to anyone wanting a very good DVD-VCR combo with two way dubbing.

Interesting comment "deneban" about the people that complain about this product and their inability to appreciate all of the technological feats that it can perform - because you are right. I can't appreciate all of the features of my RC199H because it doesn't work! Stopped reconizing discs 1 week after the warranty expired - now that is product lifecycle engineering that can't be matched. When I contacted LG and Best Buy they both asked if I got good use from it during the 1 year warranty. If you enjoy owning devices that are the very best there is - on paper, then buy one of these! Matter of fact, would you like mine!

A one of a kind super-machine, the most versatile ever manufactured - No other machine can play/record all the following: DVD-RAM, Memory Cards, AVI video* files, mp3 on DVD, and VHS Tapes.

The negative reviews in this set clearly have no concept or appreciation of how versatile this machine is over everything else.

The product is really not the problem.What I disliked is the lack of service and or support from the seller.
Although the item is refurbished it should not account for the poor image quality you get from the VCR portion. The image is poor on playback (whether it is a home recorded or store bought pre-recorded tape). If you record to tape (VCR) on any setting other than SP the image is almost unviewable. Reording on SP limits the amount of time (2hours max) you can record on tape.
The DVD portion seems ok and the little extras (multi memory card reader) work fine.
I tried to contact the seller but recieved no return notice from him. I stated in my note that I would leave feedback for him as soon as he contacted me and advised me as to what I could do about my problem.
Needless to say I did NOT leave feedback for this seller and will NOT buy from him again.

LG should change its name to NG for NOO GOOOOD. I have an LG RC199H Recorder Player. It lasted less than a year. Initially it worked fine. Then the DVD began having problems reading the disc. It would say can't read disc or no disc. I used this dvd only to play dvds, never had a chance to use the recorder. I have read so many complaints about the dvd player in this unit. LG must have purchased alot of bad lasers. You can replace the dvd portion of the player for about $110. I would rather get the satisfaction of droping this piece of junk off a building or running over it with my car. NO MORE LG! THEY MAKE JUNK!
