Perfect for the young mobile child
Review created: 09/25/06

If you have a child who is too young for a cell phone but still likes a little freedom, this is the perfect cell phone device. Users are limited to four numbers, preprogrammed by Mom or Dad, and a fifth button reserved for emergency services. Best of all, if you have a child like mine, the emergency services button has to be held for five seconds before connecting to prevent "accidental" calls; and, once the call is connected, 911 is able to lock in the location of the caller within 2 miles through GPS services so that even if your child doesn't know where he/she is, 911 does.

Verizon, the wireless service offering this phone and providing the service, has recently introduced a new program where parents can long on to a web site and see their child's location (or the phone's, if lost and the phone is on) for a low fee of $9.95 per month. A small price to pay for peace of mind.

I, above all else, have to give the Migo's manufacturer kudos and applause of the durability of this phone. During the summer, my child went swimming at a neighbor's house. Before entering the pool, he failed to remove the phone from his pocket and swam with the phone submerged in water for over an hour before realizing what he had done. Needless to say, I was sickened thinking that the phone was now junk. I immediately disassembled it and allowed it to dry out for about 36 hours and the phone now works just as good as new. That is durability!

This phone was definitely created by a parent fearful of a young child being without a way to communicate but just as fearful of excessive minutes. Absolute genius, in my opinion. However, I only rated it good based on the new release from Cingular of the Firefly, which offers the same idea but with one additional step: parents can limit the numbers allowed to call in, something not offered through the Migo.

This is the phone to buy your pre-teen!
Review created: 10/22/06(updated 12/19/06)

About a month ago, my fiance and I merged our phone services into one "family plan" and bought the little Migo for our daughter. She is going to start playing basketball after school, and we wanted to make sure she could call us whenever and wherever she needed to. This is the phone to buy your pre-teen girl!

It's neon green with a little carabiner clip that she can hook to her backpack and an ac charger to restore power overnight. There are only 4 numbers she can call. We've programmed it for Dad, Mom, Aunt Michelle and her grandmother. Anyone can call her, which is nice for her friends.

You can't call collect to a cell phone (at least the last time I checked), and we don't have a landline. If she misses her bus or practice quits early at school, she feels secure that she can grab her own phone and call. We live in a new neighborhood, and she doesn't have many friends yet.

This peace of mind for her and for me is worth the $49 or so that we paid for the phone. The family plan allows us to share 2100 minutes per month with free nights and weekends on all 3 phones. It's a good investment.

The only drawback that I noticed is that the phone is very small and the speaker is not very powerful. My daughter has found it hard to hear me if I call her and she is in a noisy place. The small size is perfect for her hands though. And it's tough as nails. She dropped it more than once, and it didn't suffer a scratch!

I've heard friends and coworkers complain that their kids run up huge bills and lose expensive phones on the football field. The migo can be integrated with a GPS tracking system with a web monitor application too, though we've not yet added this feature. I think that is about $20 per month. We've not needed it yet...Hope this helps.

Update...This phone is working well and the battery life is great. She only has to charge it about every 2 days (doesn't use much and has to power it off and hide in backpack during school hours!) I just love the security that she has a way to call me. We've had occasion to use it a few times already for emergencies (i.e. missed bus, lost housekey, etc.)

Our daughter is also learning some responsibility and good judgement. She knows when it's too early or late to make a phone call and has taken great care to not leave it in precarious places (like her brother's bedroom!) We're proud of her and [still] quite happy with our purchase. More later...

  LG MIGO Verizon Kid Phone
Review created: 05/04/07

My husband and I like the MIGO because it only has 4 buttons and therefore keeps our kid from calling everyone he knows. We bought it for safety and scheduling issues we were having. Now that we have one we are not that impressed with the sound/voice quality of the phone, it echoes horribly when talking cell to cell. It still suits our needs for now but probably wouldn't spend over $50 if I had to buy it again.

This is a gift for my son for Christmas so he hasn't used it yet... I do think a child my son's age (8) could watch you put in the "lock" code & redo the #'s himself. it wouldn't be too hard, so parents make sure you hide the manual from your kids as it has the code in it. Also, I would love to be able to download a cool ringer to it :-(

But it is a great phone. I can track where he is & I can see how many minutes he is using online.

Perfect for an 8 yr old....

Have had 2 Migos so far. The Firefly can't be located by GPS at all. MIGO GPS is not precise enough to locate a kidnapped child. It's about 3 blocks off. In traffic or in a group of apartments, the child would be impossible to locate. My Garmin GPS is accurate within 4 feet, I don't know why they can't get these more precise. Not sold anymore, they've been replaced by a regular phone able to be tracked by GPS, that you can't limit dialed numbers to just 4 hotkeys or hotkey 911. Exactly what I don't want my 10 yr old to have. "oooops....Sorry Dad, just used up all your minutes this month watching Beyonce Videos".....

I like its size, color, and that I can send my son out the door feeling a little more secure that he can reach me if he needs me.

I dislike that this particular used one keeps going to the "hands free" feature and we can't get it back to the typical audio feature. My son can't use his phone when it does this.

  Love my sons Migo

We purchased this migo for our 4 year old son and i love the Chaperone feature, as well as the fact that i can program who he calls on it. I can track his phone from my handset as well as on-line, which gives us a sense of security with him running our small neighborhood with the rest of kids. The reception could be better on it , we have a hard time understanding him sometimes. But all cell phones can be difficult at times. And it is the only phone he can really use with out messing up the settings and such at his young age. So as long as you dont mind the charge for the chaperone service or being called by your son 15 times a day while your working, this is the phone for your little one!!

Great phone for the kids. We like the GPS system, although I'd like to see it have pinpoint accuracy, which it currently does not.

  Phone well worth it
Review created: 02/23/07

I bough this phone for my daughter when she was 10 years old. the main reason my purchase was so she could call me to pick her up after basketball practice and when the bus arrived back to school (so I would not have to sit and wait).
After showing me that she was responsible, I gave her the code so she could program her own numbers because of our large family and all of her friends.
She will now be twelve this year and I just got a new phone so I am passing my old one down to her.
In cloding, these are great phones.

This phone is perfect for your kids! No extra charges like Verizon loves to add on to your bill. I was one of the original owners of the migo when it first came out, now were on the third one, both for my 12 and 5 year olds. Perfect to keep contact with kids that live in a different state or even your parents or grandparents if they are not the most tech savy people.

Purchased the phone for a friend who is going through a divorce. It is the perfect phone for her and her girls. There is no way the kids can rack up extra charges, they can only call the numbers pre-programed and there is no keyboard for texting. Stay in touch and on budget!

LG Migo -- good for the elderly
Review created: 02/28/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this phone for my mother-in-law who had heard about the "little green phone." Needless to say, eBay is the only place to easily find these phones. The Migo is an even better phone for the elderly than it ever was for kids. It's light and simple to use. I'm not crazy about the color but it was made for kids.

Wish Verizon still offered something very much like it! How about a Disney, Dora, Diego, or Build-a-Bear version?

  Migo 1000 cool but limited

I love the Migo 1000 and checked with Verizon to make sure I would be able to activate it and they said yes. Purchased, recieved, put in unlock code, charged up and Verizon said it would need an upgrade? Turned it on and it does and is working well for my boy but I wish I could change the emergeny button to not be 911. Too much temptation for a 7 year old.

Thanx

It is a perfect phone for lil ones, perfect size for little hands extremely easy to use for kids and for parents to program. Long battery life and the simplicity is something that is rare in this high tech world. It is a shame Verizon no longer offers this phone there is no reason not to other than it can not bump up the phone bills like a regular phone can.

This product is great for a young child. It is easy for them to operate. We bought it for my stepson when he was going to his father's for the summer. The phone is equipped with GPS, so we know where he is all of the time and we can be reached in a moments notice! I don't know why verizon discontinued this product!

Review created: 10/25/09

This phone has been a great phone for our 6 year old. The only reason we wanted a cell phone for her was so that she could call us or the police if necessary. It is small, compact and I don't have to worry about her calling China on it. She can only dial 4 numbers plus 911. There are a few disadvantages listed below, however, I really wish Verizon did not discontinue this phone and was glad I could get it on Ebay.

There was a little bit of confusion when I had the phone activated at the Verizon store. They really didn't know how to do it anymore. It took 3 people to figure that out.

Disadvantages to the phone are:
1. ring is not loud at all
2. the rings available are not all that good
3. you can't see the number you are dialing. You can only dial by button
