Gotham has been given a new look, and it was worth it.

Traveler's Tale has released another Lego title, and they did a good job at avoiding a straight copy and paste of the formula from the previous games, but I think the pool of game-play ideas for the genre is starting to run dry.
WHAT'S GOOD
Villain play-time: The biggest innovation of the game is allowing you to play through a story mode as the villains. So you play as Batman and Robin attempting to foil the plans of your foes, then turn around and work on the plan that is trying to be foiled. As nice of a touch as this is, it's the same game-play, just more levels.
Bat-Suits: Another way Travelers Tale mixed up the game-play was by providing different suits for Batman and Robin to find an change into. Each suit provides a new talent or feature for the heroes to use to solve the puzzles. I believe that it's merely substituting for a lack of hero characters to use, however it is a nice touch and fits in well with the Batman theme.
The things to ride: The vehicle levels are fun, and better than before. There's also extra items to find and ride in your standard level, like mech-suits and dinosaur skeletons. Awesome.
Movie Tie-ins: So Lego Star Wars was based on the 6 star wars movies and Lego Indy was based on the first 3 Indy movies. Lego Batman does not follow the same story lines as any of the Batman movies created to date. There are however obvious parallels between Lego Batman and the Tim Burton Batman movies. Things like similar plot points, and the music is basically the same soundtrack.
That which is "still": It's STILL fun, it's STILL accessible to a large audience, and there's STILL lots to collect and unlock.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:
Level sizes: Although the puzzle solving is still completely intact, to me the levels themselves didn't seem quite so large. They felt like they went by quicker, and did not have such a variety of locations. This makes sense as it's suppose to all take place in Gotham, but it doesn't help keep the environments exciting.
The novelty is starting to wear thin: If you've never played this style of Lego game before, than you'll probably have a greater sense of "this is so cool", but with 3 other similar Lego titles before it, the concept isn't as engaging as it used to be. This is the first time I didn't feel compelled to go back and collect all the mini kits or get all the "Super-Hero/Super-Villain" statuses (although i probably will anyway). Traveler's Tale hasn't bled the genre dry quite yet, but I think perhaps 2 Lego releases in the same year may have been a bit too much. I would likely welcome another installment that utilizes another franchise, but I can wait for it until at least Q4 2009.
FINAL WORD:
There are some new surprises, the puzzles are still intriguing, and the game still has the charm you'd come to expect. It was fun, and if you liked the previous titles you'll like this one too.
