Kyocera KX12 (Unlocked)

Software is dog slow. Recent calls list may take 20-30 seconds to appear.
Weather display if great.
With a keypad cover on the phone the keys are almost impossible to feel with the fingers.
Kyocera can't supply the software cable for the phone, has been on back order for a while.
Scroll function are unchangeable. Have to scroll down 6 items everytime for recent calls.
When keying in a number the phone will often skip the first number because the software is lagging behind the keypad.
Scroll buttons on right side are way too small for anyone with a medium + size hand.
Volume adjust on left side is often delayed for a while and I have to rekey the volume several times for it to be recognized.
You could not give me this phone knowing what I know now. I was sold this bill of goods as an alternative to Nextel service. Not even close. The whole KX12 adventure (Three phones) has been a nightmare. If you're looking for ptt service and a rugged phone save the money and go nextel.

I bought a kx12 for its' supposed ruggedness. What a mistake it was. Almost from the start I had problems with it shutting itself off. Not often at first, but as time went on, it got to be a real problem. Hit the send key, nothing would happen because it had shut itself off. Other times it would shut off while not being used. It also had a bad habit of cutting off calls when you tried to answer them. The vibrate mode was almost useless as it was usally not noticable. The phone has a bunch of ring tones built into it, but most are useless as they can't be heard under normal circumstances as the ringer volumne is way to low. The speakerphone sometimes was almost impossible to turn off once it was turned on. This was a real problem if it got turned on accidently. The speakerphone worked well if it was functioning properly though. The looks of the phone are not pretty, but I bought it because it was supposed to be rugged. When I sent it in, they said the circuit board was cracked and wouldn't be covered by warranty. The phone had not been abused, so much for rugged part. I didn't even inquire as to the cost of fixing it. I just told them to send it back that way as I didn't feel it was worth fixing. After reading some other users' reviews of this turkey, I realized even if they fixed it, I still wouldn't have a phone that would work to satifaction. I will replace it with something else. And this time I'm checking reviews first, not after the fact. Avoid this phone like the plague!

Our company supplies these phones to the team leaders because of their durability. We have carried several other phones over the years, and rarely does one last 6 months. Our teams are that hard on them. These Kyocera's are TOUGH! We have only had to replace one in two years. We have splashed water on them, dropped them repeatedly and been abusive..this is our industry. Sometimes the software is slow, this usually means they need to be turned off and restarted. Like the others reviews say, sometimes they do shut off on their own. If you restart them periodically this minimizes their own restarting, however this is the negative attribute if they have one.

Positive
Phone is very durable has stood up to my 2 & 3 year old fighting over it, dropping it numerous times and even a dunking in the toilet.
Long battery life.

Phone shutts it self off. This has occured from the very first day it was active and I bought it from Alltel direct.
Drops calls and shutts off while you are talking.
Is very slow to text message. I can be on the third or fouth letter and the first letter is just showing up on the screen.
The battery also takes a long time to charge but you don't have to charge very often :)

Buttons on phone are very small my father, 70 years old, has an extremely hard time using the phone

Literally this phone is a big-blue-brick.
I constantly get comments everywhere I go saying "Thats your phone? It looks like a bomb!" or "Wow.. it looks really durable. Can I throw it?" etc.

Despite it's size and the comments I get, it still has it's useful qualities. Whenever I'm in the dark or can't see where to put the keys in my car, I just click on the flashlight button. It's acutally a great little accessory. Who would know you would need a flashlight in your phone?

A couple more problems with this phone;
is that it's soo unbelievably slow.. thank goodness that it is durable, because I have thrown it a few times.
And to try and text, is horrible. I have yet to learn how to use the Rapid Mode for texting.. maybe thats my problem, because I have to sit there and type out every single letter, while listening to the loud annoying "CLICK" of the keypad.
Also once you go over it's capacity for text messages, it starts rejecting incoming texts.. instead of deleting old ones. Horrible.
Overrall the phone isn't great. It's waterproof and durable, has a flashlight and touch-2-talk capabilities.. definatly good for a hike in the mountains, or a hard-hat work place. But not for regular everyday use.

huge battery, very comfortable and clear. This is my 1 Kyocera and it is bulit proof. If you are looking for a good solid phone. Awsome options.

good condition units, nice and clean. Was not able to ship for a few days, so shipped an additional at no charge. Very pleasant experience. Will deal with them again.

I liked the price. my husband had one for 3 yrs and lost it. the battery lasts for days even if it isn't charged, and it is indestructible. the phone I purchased was in good condition. It cuts off occasionally for no reason, but it seems to be as dependable as his other one.

Love this phone, very durable in the woods,(rain,sleet or shine), on the water in a boat or at work. Pretty much "guy" proof. Does not have all the bells and whistles like photo and such; but for communication whenever and wherever,,this is the ticket. I will not hesitate to take this phone on me side wherever I go, and feel confident it will work when I need it too. I live near the "sportmans paradise" by the outerbanks and avidly hunt and fish. There is no telling when an emergency will arise for me or someone else. I depend upon this phone. I have used this phone for the past three years, one for strictly a work phone and one for my personal use. Both stay with me 24 hours a day.

I have not recieve it yet 10/05/09 it has been over a month. I have email mail him and no reply. He have got my money but no phone

I needed a new phone just like the one I bought. The seller was amazing. Received the product very fast!

IT is durable but the phone is very slow to respond to any commands and it not user friendly at all. We are very disappointed in the phone it is really behind in today's technology. The battery does not hold a charge for more than a few hours at a time and this was with replacing it with a new battery. I am sorry that we purchased this phone.

I like that the phone was cheap. I dislike that the phone is so old. The battery doesnt hold a charge for very long and the car charger blew both my fuses. Could be a coincendence i guess..The seller was prompt with delivery and it was the phone i ordered.

I thought it would be in better shape. When I looked at it in the picture it looked alot newer than what I got. I should have read the details and asked questions before I made the buy.

Phone did take a couple of drops, but stopped charging within 30 days of getting it. it was the 2nd one I had, because I had trouble with the charger on the first one!

Also seem sluggish in its operations.

it is a nice phone but it is bigger than it was expecting and after using it so much that battery life is starting to not last long but over all it is a good phone

I bought this phone as a replacement for my main phone, so that we did not need to sign a contract with the phone company. The first phone I received did not work at all, it would not power up. Contacted seller, and needed to send phone back then they would send out a replacement. When I received the replacement, the battery would not hold a charge. Contacted seller, they would send a battery replacement. Received battery replacement, battery did not fit into the phone. Contacted seller, they would send another battery. They sent it, but I did not receive it. So, they sent another. In the mean time, I ordered a battery from another company. Received the BRAND NEW battery from the other company and then finally the USED battery from this seller! The brand new battery is working great in my "new to me" phone. Glad to be done with this ordeal. After all is said and done, the second phone I received was in good shape and good working order. Very disappointed that they would not send a NEW battery to go along with it. Not sure how they expect people to be able to use the phones they sell, with discharged batteries.

i wish it had been a little smaller, but over all it is well worth the money, plan on letting my grandson use it.....he is only 10 and this looks like it will hold up to his dropping it onto the floor

I needed a phone that we could all communicate with on the job and this works great.
i would recommend this phone to anyone working outdoors.
