This is a Kung-Fu "Western" set in the Amercian West in the 1870s and was a groundbreaker at the time it was released (1970s). This show was actually done as two stories in one - the American West and flashbacks to the Shaolin Temple in China where our wandering monk got his start. As a life-long martial artist, at the time I found the flashbacks back to the Shaolin Temple equally, if not more interesting than the American West story. Watching it some 35 years later, the same is true. There are glimpses of a nice variety of authentic Kung-Fu styles especially Praying Mantis and a host of forms including Snake, Tiger, Dragon, and others. Modern technology allows us to slow down the action and really study the Chinese masters doing their forms - and they are doing real forms. There is a also a welcome blend of Buddhist and Taoist wisdom. It is interesting watching this application of eastern wisdom to a violent western society.

This was certainly the only tv show I know of which blended Chinese fighting styles and old wisdom in a highly watchable package and did it well. The first and third seasons are my favorites. Rather than the constant "beat-em-up" martial arts movies we are innundated with today, this is a classic, with a message, and very tastefully done. Buy it, watch it with your family - you will all be better off for it.

Season I best of the III.
Review created: 05/30/07(updated 12/16/07)
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Season I is truest to the creators ideals, while II continues, but starts to depart. III shifts to mysticism as creative direction shifted to Carradine's interests and has several part one and two episodes.

I watched most of the series as a kid when originally aired, but in 1982, a college kid, I became a devoted fan watching on cable each week. That is how I was introduced to the wonderful philosophy of the series which has its source in Buddhist Taoism. Many influences ranged from Christianity to Zen to all the great world religions and philosophies. It is interesting to see how Roman Catholic priest are pertrayed as noble. Protestant ministers as idiots. I read reviews on the program from I think Christianity Today and very critical of the series as not appropriate for Christians. Censorship also meant the fight scenes were limited which is why special filming techniques were used like slow motion.

Season I has the pilot movie and I cherish many scenes in it as young Caine is challenged to learn and grow. First few episode filmed shortly after the pilot were filmed on a very short season. Expert marketing execs did not think a East mets West show set in the old West could be popular. Each of the 3-4 1st season programs won its time slot even though moved around the week. This series has many tie ins to the era it was filmed in.
Season II and III are full years. Again, Caine is most interesting and has a distant look in season I. Trying very hard to learn the English language, a harden aloof look to his face and often emotionless with very soft spoken words. David Carradine's (b. 1936- ) performances are amazingly outstanding. Also Keye Luke (1904-1991) as Master Po and Philip Alm (1905-1978) as Master Kan. Young Radames Pera (b. 1960- ) as young student Caine and all 3 are also wonderful actors and said to be acting as their own personalities. The whole tv series was shot on Warner Bros. motion picture sets, and as the result- the background is rich in details. The monastery, for example, was the castle in Camelot. All the main sets have been torn down and that is why the Kung Fu TV Movie from around 1988 lacks those scenes.

I understand there is a new Kung Fu movie is to be release in 2008 and filmed in China. NO special effect fights, rather a return to the roots of Taoism and should again bring us a wonderful product. It maybe the full length pilot film re-telling the story. Around 1970, the execs decided against releasing it in theaters, and had the script scaled back to a TV Movie of the week. Or, it may be a pre series movie with focus upon the development of the Shaolin monastery. Only one of the two original creators still lives.

I recommend The Book of Caine which has a great deal more background about the series, althhough the episode guide is inaccurate. Author used scripts which deviated from what was actually filmed.

Kung Fu is the best show ever made in my opinion, nothing I have watched before comes close. I recently saw a few Kung Fu episodes on TV and I liked it so much I bid on all 3 seasons on ebay so I could see each and every episode in my own time. It is entertaining to watch and never leaves me bored. Once started, I have to watch an episode all the way through without missing a moment. It teaches great life lessons and every episode is very meaningful. It leaves me with a good, calm feeling inside, unlike many modern shows that are so over-dramatized and fast paced, the whole world is at stake every moment, etc.. those type of shows are not good for you to watch before going to bed or anytime for that matter. After having been turned on to Kung Fu, anything else just cant compare at all, nothing beats Kung Fu. I'd recommend it for all kids to watch, I think it would be a great show to grow up on. I'm watching it at about the same age my parents did back when it was first airing. Now we like to watch an episode together every night. I'm almost through season 1 and I cant get enough of it. It's a shame it only went on for a couple years.
I regret not having seen this great show sooner in my life.

I've always been a huge fan of the TV series Kung Fu, but only recently thought that the series could be on DVD's. I was enthralled to find that the series is on DVD's and could be purchased by the season. After purchasing the first season, I had to have the next two as well. The product is a quality product and not only shows the series in the order that they were made but also has commentaries by David Carradine(the star) offering tidbits of personal memories of what was actually took place behind the scenes. Also there were many interviews with the producers and others that made the show possible. While I am the owner of over 200 movies on DVD, I consider the sets of the Kung Fu series one of my most prized possessions.

Excellent. I love this show. David Carradine truly shines in this series. The show has wonderful stories with action (unlike some the show and movies you see today with all action and no real story line). Highly recommended.

  Kung Fu 1st season
Review created: 07/10/09
by:

This is by far one of the best programs that has ever been on TV. I used to
watch this show when it aired in 73-74. It was the actor, David Carradine I
enjoyed watching, yet the scripts are great and moral. The slow motion is very
effective in letting the mind really grasp what normally goes much to quickly
otherwise. All around the 1st season is the best one, although, the second I
am now watching and even though Caine gave up his hat and I wished he hadnt, it
still is as good as ever. I suppose the longer hair in the 2nd season could be
maturity and growth or just change, to give us interest in the character as he ages. As things in life change
so does this show with each year. I recommend this 1st season highly, it is my
favorite one. Dona Lopshire.

"Kung Fu" brings back memories of the 70s.
Review created: 06/27/09
by:

As soon as I began to watch the original pilot episode of "Kung Fu", my mind began to flood with all of these old memories of the early 1970s and it was great! Not just the TV show, which was just as entertaining now as it was back then, but the era itself. I highly recommend this DVD collection simply because it transcends all age groups and social barriers with its thoroughly entertaining storyline and its excellent quality of family entertainment, the likes of which we rarely see anymore in this modern age of R-rated movies with too much sex and violence. I sat and watched it with my teenage grand daughters and to my surprise they genuinely enjoyed it as much as I did. I'm definitely going to get the rest of the DVDs in this collection.

Kung Fu: The Complete First Season
Review created: 04/09/09

The series is of a fighting monk in the united states looking for his family, while avoiding capture from the emperor of China. I like the flashbacks to when he was a boy learning his lessons and how they apply to the situation at hand. He learned from the monks how to live and help others, using wisdom, and force when required. I had seen most of the kung fu series before and wanted to see some that I missed.

  kung fu - seasons 1-3

i bought this more for nostalgic reasons more than anything else. i did enjoy the series when it was broadcast back in the 70's. it's still interesting to see some actors, some still popular, back when they were younger. and nothing against david carradine, but...watching him tring to perform various forms of kung fu is something akin to watching bigfoot performing Swan Lake.

  Product not complete
Review created: 04/06/08

While I was happen that the shipping was very fast, upon viewing the DVD's I discovered that disc 1 had disc 3 copied on it, so I have 2 copies of disc 3, one mark disc 1 and other mark disc 3, but they are the same disc when you play them on your DVD player. I sent a meaage to the seller about this problem 2 weeks ago, but I have not heard from them to this date, which leads me to suspect that since they got their mony quickly, they do not seem to care that I have not received what they claimed I was buying from them. This is my first unpleasant experience on eBey. If they were to contact me and make things right, I would be willing to write an admendment to this email. But, for now, I am simply out my money with only 2 out of the 3 discs of what was supposed to be the complete first season of the Kung Fu series.
Sincerely,
Fr. John R.

One of the BEST TV series ever.....
Review created: 03/04/08

I watched this series when it originally aired on tv and never missed an episode. The characters and philosophy of each episode made wonderful sense with great thought put into each plot by the writers.I even went so far as to take Kung Fu classes with a good friend of mine who shared my interest in the series.
The only disappointment I had was when they took the series off the air. This was due to David Carradine wanting to leave. But he worked very hard, starring in almost every scene and also directing. It took a lot out of him but I was happy he stayed for the 3 seasons that he did.
