Krups XP2070 Espresso Machine & Coffee Maker

The results from this espresso machine are consistently excellent. I love the taste and creama from it. Because it is automatic, however, you must be consistent in your grinding and tamping. If you are using a chopping blade cutter/grinder, invest in a mill that grinds consistently. The tamper provided, is useless but will give a bit of time to get a proper one. If the grind and tamp is not consistent, then the amount of espresso will change between cups due to the automatic pump programming. The machine memory will make exactly the same amount of espresso each time according to the programmed amount you set if the grind and tamp are the same. I like this feature for convenience and consistency.
This machine has a relatively small water reservoir for the size of machine. And, the water catch tray is also undersized. This results in having to deal with water fill and waste while making only a couple cups of cappuccino. While this is manageable, it is annoying. Also, if you are going to make more than one double shot cappuccinos, all the milk needs to be steamed at one time in a larger pitcher because the machine will only go into the steam setting one time without cooling back down to the brewing temperature in between. This, too, is annoying if you are used to having full control of your machine. To do the cooling, the machine uses more water which ends up in the waste tray and effectively limits how much cappuccino can be made without refilling the water and emptying the waste water tray.
The machine is bigger than my old Krups 863, but not by too much. It does take some counter space and is heavy enough that you won’t want to be moving it around. Unfortunately, to fill the water tank, the machine cannot be sitting under a common kitchen cupboard as you will not have enough space above to get the reservoir out to fill. So to avoid moving the machine around all the time, plan for counter space that is unobstructed above the machine. It does replace two other machines however so it does actually save some space.
The froth attachment has the small vent hole that allows anyone to perfectly froth the milk. You really have no choice whether to use it or not if you like to froth milk the “old fashioned” way. If you remove it, the steam spout is not long enough to go into a pitcher, so get over it and use the frothing attachment. It does work quite well. Also, this machine has enough pressure and heat that your milk will reach temperature quickly.
I must admit I haven’t used the coffee side of the machine much because the cappuccino is great. The coffee side does work well and has its own water reservoir. The filter latches in securely to make sure the coffee stops running out if you like to get that first strong cup before the pot is finished. There is a timer to have the coffee ready in the morning when you get up, if that is your lifestyle.
The Clock / Timer is not very convenient in that you must scroll through to the set time whenever you use it. It doesn’t remember when you set it, yesterday.
All in all, it is a nice machine and is easy to use for consistent flavor.
