this is a very well built camera, solid feels great in your hand.picture quality is excellent with minolta lenses.problem areas are l.c.d. bleed, which means the l.c.d. panel on the camera sometimes bleeds and makes it hard to read, rubber grip turns white with age, this does not affect the operation of the camera.there is also an internal battery which will need replaced at a cost of about $30 overall a great camera which can be found on ebay at reasonable price.

If you find a good one, you have a classic SLR in the best sense, solid, reliable and fun to use.

But my EBay experience warrants a cautionary note. In addition to the problems mentioned in the previous review, these cameras suffer from failure of the aperture control module, which means that the aperture will always be at f22.

This means that most of your pictures will be severly underexposed. In most cases this problem will cost more than the camera is worth to fix. It took me three buys to get a good one. So be fore-warned. Ask the seller about this.

Minolta Maxxum 7000 - Pros Cons & What to look out for!
Review created: 03/26/07
by:
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Absolutely the best & most reliable slr STILL on the market, (yes, I'm biased).
Received first on as grad present from my daddy in 1990. 2 professional cleanings in 17 years, no other work to it, and was still working until stolen a few months ago ARGH! My present setup: 2 7000's and 1 7000i

WATCH FOR:
* LCD Bleeding -Ask for photo of display, bleeding shows even when camera is off
* The Aperture Control - can stick on one setting
* Battery compartment - Originally took 4 AAA, optionals created for AA & lithium. Ask if ANY corrosion on battery contacts, occurs when water gets in or camera stored with batteries in it.If so request picture, minimal rusting won't effect. But major corrosion will only get worse & cause power drain or worse.
* Rubber Grip - Can turn white over time
Pros:
* Most accessories still available, instructions for all cameras & accessories can be downloaded for free, extremely durable.
Cons:
* If it breaks, usually cheaper to buy a new one. Internal battery can cost $25 to have professional replace or $7 if you do it yourself.

Feel free to email me with any questions regarding the 7000/7000i or 5000/5000i.

  minolta maxxum 7000 film camera

I have been shooting film for about 25 years. I saw these cameras when they first came out and wanted one. I didn't have the money at the time. I bought 5 of these camera bodies over the last couple of months. 2 for me, and 2 for my son, and 1 spare. I set us up with the same kits. 1 camera has an 80 to 300 telephoto lens, and the other has a 35 to 80 lens and a dedicated minolta flash. Unless you are shooting at a long distance this covers you well. The auto focus is great, and simple to operate. Film loading is easy to get use to. Auto exposure is great, as long as you use enough speed to the film. The film advance is motor driven after each frame is exposed. It is loud, but not overly loud. This camera has enough features to it that you would want to read the owners manual, which are out there to purchase. I don't use the data back features. But it is nice to use them if you do that day date stuff. As a total package this camera for me rates GREAT!!!

  Minolta Maxxum 7000 Film Camera

I already owned a Maxxum 7000 Camera, purchased USED in 1988, Still works excellent, and is still my main-use camera. Several professional photographers have said that it is "a workhorse"/ "THE camera that started the autofocus revolution" plus I had seen numerous good critiques on the Web.
It allows both manual and autofocus, yet is simple to operate. By getting a second Maxxum 7000 body, I can make better use of AF lenses and filters sets that I own. I own several other Minolta camera's : SRT 101, X700, HImatic 7.-- all functional, all used frequently on a rotational basis -- for amateur photography.

When I saw the opportunity to buy a NEW body, I got it without question.

I have owned this camera for many years during which I have taken some of the most breathtaking pictures imaginable. This camera is as good today as when it was manufactured over 20 years ago. Everything still works, the pictures are exceptionally sharp, and the camera has never failed me. If you are looking for a good film camera because you just aren't sold on digital or prefer to have both, you can buy one of these on eBay pretty reasonably.

  Maxxum Collectors - Notes

Agreed-excellent camera and worth having a spare body.

1. Internal battery and instructions are available on EBay from at least one vendor for under $10 with shipping. Use "search" function on EBay; easy to change out.

2. Also: Collectors; look for the MAXXUM name with "crossed XX" as in EXXON's logo. These were the very earliest issued MAXXUM products, before EXXON complained. Bodies-7000,lenses-50mm,37-70mm Zoom[some with Macro] and flash units-2800 are available sometimes for a small premium in price.

I have two crossed xx 7000s that I alternate with an 8000i.

  Minolta Maxxum 7000 AF SLR

It is one of the best SLR'S ever made. Most accurate metering system, very reliable, full feature Slr, with the best Mirror transport system you can have in any Camera. The Auto-focus is a bit slow compared to newer Minolta's, but that is about the only set back you have. Many accessories mave been made for this camera and if you love film over digital, you got it made. The only problem lately is getting Lenses. Minolta sold out and the new Sony Lenses are pure junk, to bad. I been using Minolta for over 30 years and wish they would have been more careful keeping there Company in business. The picture Quality of Minolta Lenses surpasses all other Mayor Brands in their class. Especially Nikon, good alternatives are Tamron and Tokina, stay away from Sigma, made to brake

  Well made classic camera

I recently purchased this camera because my dad has one. He got one brand new, with all accessories for Christmas back in 1985 or 86. He has always taken awesome photos. He ended up taking my sisters wedding photos with it, as the photographer she hired didnt have a spare battery and his died right after he got there. She would have had NO pictures if it werent for my dad...and her pictures are just great!
Anyway, great pictures, easy to use. Heavy (which could be a good or bad thing depending on the person)..I like the way it feels in my hands, made well. Auto focus is a little slow and loud, but if you are used to it then it doesnt matter.
I think overall, a great camera, better made then todays cheap plastic ones. Lenses/flashes still available and at a much better price then Canon lenses. If you want some nice pics, program mode or manual to learn with, I recommend one.

Ahead of its time: Minolta Maxxum 7000
Review created: 06/06/07(updated 11/24/07)

Minolta MAXXUM 7000 is the world's first auto focus SLR which is deployed in huge quantities. When it is launched in 1985, it got great attraction from consumers. However, it was not the first commercially available SLR. First auto focus SLR try is done by Pentax by ME super model but it was not a success and did not well accepted by the consumers. It had some problems and was not very user friendly. However, MAXXUM 7000 was the real entry for the photographers to put their foot in to the auto focus age.

The camera has a strange shape, does look very good. But once I take it in my hands, my feel is completely changed. It has a great fell, usage is easy all buttons and dials are perfectly placed.

To be honest I bought this camera for my collection since it was the first commercially successful auto focus SLR. I do not expected that much. It outperformed my Canon EOS 630 big time for the auto focus ion low light, even though it is way older than 630.

And recently, I bought one more as a back up to my digital MAXXUM 7D.

Common problems & issues needs to be considered while buying one:
- Aperture always closes max (this is a problem which make camera unusable, be careful about this)
- LCD Bleed
- Discoloring on the handle
- Prefer 4AAA handle, other one makes it bulky

I just love this camera! It was my first 35mm and I was able to take pretty good pictures for a rookie! I was amazed when I was able to capture fourth of July fireworks with this camera and they weren't blurry! I purchased different lenses for this camera and it is just a joy. Very comfortable to hold. It made many trips to Hawaii!

I love the easy use of this camera. It is a great looking camera. Picture quality is great and still 10x better than today's boring plain digital ones. You can get these cameras for a small fraction of the original price. No wonder these cameras cost around $450 even twenty years ago. The main word with these old school cameras is quality design and workmanship. I love these cameras and even have a Minolta Maxxum 5000 camera also. Today's cameras can not even compare with the old school ones!!!!

by far the best auto focus camera minolta ever built. the most durable camera and easiest to have repaired. metering system is the sharpest still of any minolta camera i've used. lcd displays are apt to have some bleed and it has an internal battery that needs replacing every several years but both of these negatives do not come close to outwaying all the positives this camera brings to the table.

Very happy with the 7000 af camera. In fact I've bought 2 in the last few months. I also bought a book to help understand some of the other settings on the camera. In program mode the camera is very easy to use. The more I read and use this camera the more I like it. I also bought a 9000 AF but I seem to like the 7000 much better.

  MInolta Maxxum 7000 film camera

After buying several minolta maxxum 7000's on ebay, I can tell you there is a great deal of potential there, offset with a great deal of risk. I have found that the owners who have the best of intentions don't know how to judge a camera or lens and misrepresent what they have to offer, so it is best to buy from a professional. More than half of the camera's I have received cannot be used for professional purposes due to the age and dust in both camera's and lenses that go with them.

It would appear that though the camera can be one of the best cameras ever produced by Minolta, the cleaniness is a serious problem with this 20-30 year old camera and even for those sitting (safely) in a bag in the closet for many years they still seem to accumulate dust and dirt internally and this can affect the quality of your pictures. I have only received one clean camera in about 12 ordered, and it was still in the plastic bag it came in and original box , properly sealed and stored with caps on, and is one heck of a snappy little camera. I had to clean all the rest, and only half can be cleaned to my satisfaction, after working on them. Lenses have the same problems showing debris inside the lens which require complete dissassembly. If you can get a good one without bleeding and still clean and snappy, I highly recommend the 7000. I love mine, but there is some really serious risk with ordering a camera this old, and the prized 50mm lens can come in with fungus and sloppy shutter mechanisms as well, so be careful. I have to tear apart almost every one, and it is not a job for a novice, but again, can be very rewarding if you pick up the right lens that has been properly stored. If it still has the box and owners manual with it, it is usually a good sign the owner has taken proper care, and you will get the film based high quality pictures you intended to invest in. In summary, buy with a box to protect your investment, or from a pro. Disclaimer: I do not consider myself a professional, but a total of 35 years experience amateur with good taste for quality. Good luck.

I bought this as a beginner camera for my daughter because it advertized a fully automatic as well as manual operation option. The seller stated that it was fully operational. Sounds good but doesn't work. This camera only works in manual mode. Since it was a gift and not given right away, I missed the return window. A disappointment. I guess it's what I get for not buying new.

  Minolta Maxxum Camera and Lenses
Review created: 11/19/08

Haven't tried the camera yet but it is a body I use to have years ago and loved. The lenses that came with it were the real find. The 70-210 f/4 "beer can" is a stellar companion to my Sony Alpha 200. Despite the weight and semi-slow focus it produces beautiful images and the f/4 across the range is nice in low light.

The 50mm f/1.7 is a classic piece of glass and produces sharp images and is great indoors. Both lenses are welcome additions to my DSLR kit. Getting harder to find at low prices. The film body will be nice to have for slides.

  Minolta 7000i camera with lens
Review created: 10/19/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was greatly impressed with excellent quality and condition of Minolta 7000i film camera with leather body and lens case, and Minolta lens (28-200mm, 50mm, 200mm, and 1.4 converter with case protectors). It was honestly described in detail, and she answered my questions regarding equipment very quick and honestly via email. I have say this was an excellent deal and much more than what I was searching for in Minolta. I am a professional photographer with 24 plus years experience with Minolta equipment, and this was in very fine working condition. I was able to find camera lithium battery locally, and it works great! All displays and buttons work perform very well.

Everything was well packaged and protected (double boxed with packing). I was surprised to the utmost and it was more than I expected! WOW!

This was my third and most favorable Ebay transaction and give it an excellent rating.

I tell and show others the great blessing this transaction was to me.

I highly recommend Tees_Treasures and would purchase future items of interest, based on her honesty and professionalism.

Thanks!

  Maxxum 7000 - Keep it a secret!
Review created: 09/30/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I really hesitate to leave a review of this 27 year old camera because I really don't want to spoil it for myself by giving it a great review and then helping drive up the price on ebay. These can be had really cheap (I've gotten more than one for under $10) In the last 2 years I have bought four of these since I want to ensure that I will always have a working one in my collection. It's one of the earliest autofocus SLRs and does not snap into focus as quickly as Minolta's made even a few years later, but it's still plenty fast nonetheless. The crispness of the focus is one of the things I love about the camera. I use it mainly for taking pictures of my sons playing Baseball. Coupled with the fabulous "Beercan" Minolta Zoom this baby takes great action shots, particularly when using the Shutter priority mode at 1/2000 of a second. It really freezes the action. Another feature is a built in autowinder that is relatively fast for the kind. I'd bet it fires off at just under 2 frames per second enabling you to get some pretty great action sequences. In Program Mode you really can't take a bad picture. Another thing I love is that the flash mount on this camera accepts standard automatic flashes and works automatically with the flashes made for the XG series (MANUAL FOCUS) that preceeded it. These can be bought very inexpensively too.

The pictures of your camera good have been a bit more close up and more angles!
