Product Description
A memorable image... or a sub par shot? Quite often, focusing speed is what determines the outcome. Now you can put the odds in your favor with the DiMAGE Z1, which boasts the fastest autofocusing in its class. The key to this speed is Rapid AF, an unrivaled new focusing technology from Konica Minolta. Rapid AF focuses on your subject in approx. 0.4 seconds at 10x optical zoom, and is even faster at wider angles. In terms of comfort during shooting, only 35mm film cameras come close. The superior speed and accuracy of Rapid AF comes from its innovative hybrid design, the combination of a passive sensor and video AF. Further accuracy is provided by the camera's wide 3-point focusing area.Even if your subject is far away, you can bring it in closer to fill the frame with Mega Zoom. This extra-wide 40x zoom range offers tremendous possibilities with shot composition. Mega Zoom is composed of two parts. The first is a high-precision 10x optical zoom lens with 10 elements in 7 groups. The lens contains 2 aspherical surfaces that help keep the camera lightweight and compact. Mega Zoom's second component is its seamless 4x digital zoom, which expands your overall range to the equivalent of 38 to 1,520 mm. This scope makes the DiMAGE Z1 an ideal choice for large-scale events and outdoor shooting. Zooming is quick and smooth.Movie recording is another area where the DiMAGE Z1 takes the lead. Its VGA recording mode (640 x 480, 30fps) delivers four times the resolution and twice the frame rate of the QVGA recording used by conventional digital cameras. That means stunning movie clips with camcorder-like quality. During movie recording, Konica Minolta's advanced autofocus technology keeps your subject in focus for excellent results. Afterwards, you can use the movie frame capture function to save any frame in your movie as a still shot. The DiMAGE Z1 features a 3.2 megapixel CCD sensor with a primary color filter to ensure high color fidelity. The images you capture will be detailed enough to turn into large-size prints: 17 cm x 13 cm (7 inches x 5 inches) at 300dpi printer resolution, or an even bigger 35 cm x 26 cm (14 inches x 10 inches) at 150dpi resolution. It takes more than a lot of pixels to make a great digital image... you need rich colors as well. To satisfy this need, CxProcess II delivers image after image with lush, vivid colors and minimal noise. CxProcess II is the latest version of Konica Minolta's acclaimed image processing technology. All of the more advanced DiMAGE cameras include CxProcess. If there's too little light to work with, digital cameras tend to produce some unwanted graininess in images. However, the DiMAGE Z1 offers an outstanding solution in such situations, thanks to its advanced noise reduction circuitry. By turning on the noise reduction feature for slow shutter shooting, you can get clearer images of nighttime scenery.

I searched long and hard before deciding on this camera and found it is the ideal camera in the price range for the majority of users.
For those that like advanced features you will be happy to see that you can manually adjust aperture and shutter speed.
For those that like ease of use you will be happy to see that it can be completely automatic, and even have automatic settings for portraits, landscape, etc.
Macro zoom is amazing on this camera.
Most shops try to sell you on high megapixel cameras, but the truth is you really don't need it. Your printer can't print that high of resolution. Most printers won't print above 8.5x11, and 3.2 MP prints beautifully at that size. I have framed prints in my living room from this camera and people have thought they were commercially purchased prints.
A lot of cameras will fit these praises. However, the two things that sold me on THIS camera over others are:
#1 = speed!!! Go to a camera store and take a photo with this, then take one with a comparable camera. This one is MUCH faster both grabbing the photo and processing it. You will only find a faster camera if you spend 2x as much on a digital SLR. This is the one reason I avoided going digital for so long. It took way too long to capture a photo. With candid photos (kids, etc) the moment is usually gone before the camera will take the photo. Not so with this camera!
#2 = Video. The video resolution is 2x that of most digital cameras (640x480), it is only limited by the size of your SD card, and has sound. I have played video caps on my big screen TV and they look as good as my camcorder videos.
This camera absolutely has top rating in my book for the price range!
3 people have bought this same camera after using mine. That's the best form of advertising.

      Best Camera for eBay
    Review created: 12/16/05

I spent several weeks looking at different cameras before settling on the Dimage z1 camera. I would highly recommend it to anyone needing a good macro camera.

    Pros of the Camera

    1) The Macro feature is the best I have found for closeups of items for eBay
    2) The zoom feature is nice although I don't use it.
    3) The video feature takes crisp clear pictures
    4) Compared to some cameras, this has one of the best manual settings. I have been able to adjust easily with the menus to make my pictures even better.
    5) The speed of the pictures is great - unless taking pictures of red clothing.

    Cons of the Camera

There are a few little quirks about the camera that I dislike that made me give this a 4/5.

    1) The camera itself is bulky. In the store I thought it was a really handy feature. Once home I found it heavy and sort of awkward when taking hundreds of pictures at a time. This feature makes it really inconvenient for those quick snap shots of my kids.

    2) The zoom feature is fragile. I have paid to have this fixed twice! That's from it falling when the tripod fell over. It's easily knocked off it's track. And it's not cheap - it cost $165 to get it fixed the first time!

    3) It really eats up batteries...and it takes 4 at a time! The best option is to buy 12 rechargeables and keep them charging.

    4) For some reason my camera really hates taking pictures of black clothing...it's a quirk I deal with.

    5) The expense of this camera makes it less than ideal, unless you can use it for a variety of uses.

Overall I give this a 4/5 rating. If you want a more professional camera, this is great. If you are looking for a simple snap-shot camera, I would not purchase this camera.
