Good Macro lens for Minolta and Sony SLR's
This lens is great for macro shots of close items. The best way to initially test the lens is to use it to take pictures of coins. Use a variety of coins, and you will see the intricate details in the surface of the coins.
This lens is also great for flowers and other non-moving subjects.
It is not so great for live insects, because you need to get very close with this lens, and the close proximity may scare them away.
The Minolta version is exactly like the new Sony version, so if you have a Sony DSLR and you do not mind hunting for a reasonably priced used lens, then you could save money by getting one of these.
As of 2008, the average price of a used Minolta Maxxum 50mm f/2.8 Macro lens in good shape is around $200. The lens should come with both the front and rear caps.
