A Fantastic Memoir of Stalin's Horrible Gulag!! Awesome
Review created: 04/06/09

I could not sleep for many nights after reading this book. It is a classic look at life in the Arctic death camps of the Gulag. Scary, horrible, and so terribly sad and though it claims to be a 'Novel' it is based on facts from real experiences by Shalamov and those who suffered the same fate as him. An incredible and insightful book that you will never forget! God bless those poor souls who passed through Stalin's miserable Gulag and labor camps. May they never be forgotten and their stories live on in the hearts of those of us who read their stories. Awesome stuff.

Essential reading for all under age 30!

All utopians (i.e., most young people) who long for socialism and who did not live through the Cold War must read Kolyma Tales. These historical short stories complement Solzhyentsyn's non-fictional "Gulag Archipelago." One wonders which was worse: Stalin's USSR or Hitler's Reich. Written by a survivor of the slave labor camps in the gold mines of far northeastern Siberia (opposite Alaska), the stories are moving, entertaining, and chilling. Wear a heavy sweater.
