The very Roots of the X-Files this Cheap and Cheezy Series is what started it all! I Love Darin McGaven AKA Kolchak. Every story is an edge of your seat mystery culmanating in the death of the Vampire of Zombie or Warewolf by our beloved hero Kolchak. Then he wraps up the story with a little voice over epilog in Kolchaks own words...always underscoring how he's saves the city and nobody believes him. He's a real hero. This series shows how really great drama can come from shows with little or no budget. I bought my dad a copy.

I remember sneaking up to watch this show after my bed time and being scared out of my wits. Even today some of the story lines are extremely spooky. It would be hard to watch Carl Kolchak sew the lips shut on a sleeping zombie without having chills.
Chris Carter said that this show was his inspiration for the X-Files and I can see some parallel in a few episodes.
Darren McGavin plays the role of Carl Kolchak with great ease. His drab blue suit and his funky hat add to his character. It's too bad they only shot 20 episodes. I have read a few articles and Darren McGavin was quoted as saying he was glad the show was cancelled as it was not a good time filming these episodes. You wouldn't know it though by watching.
The video quality on the set is average. There is a lot of noticable dust and debris in the footage. Some of the night scenes suffer from being too dark and grainy. Each episode does have 4 chapters and each disc has a "Play All" feature.
The audio tracks sound OK for their age and I didn't notice any hiss. They are English and Spanish subtitles. There are no extra features on this set.
All 20 episodes of the series are included on 3 discs, 2 of which are double-sided:

Classic Horror T.V.
) This is one of the first Horror Series on Network television.Darren McGavin as
the intrepid Karl Kolchak was slaying vampires 30 years before Buffy.Very good
set.The only drawback is you have to buy the Companion T.V. movies separately.

A must-have for Kolchak: The Night Stalker fansI've been an avid fan of the show since the 70s and had been able to watch most of the episodes (not all) on a cable channel last year (then they took them off the air). I was thrilled to find this dvd set. The biggest surprise of all was the picture clarity. Wow! for the first time ever i can describe it as 'crisp', so i thoroughly enjoyed it. Great series. Great visually, plus there were scenes that i had never seen, apparently these are the uncut version of the episodes. If you like Kolchak: The Night Stalker you know you need to get this set!

But still a fun collection that serves as a fantastic collection of antique automobiles.
It also serves as a stark reminder why "cutting fashion" clothing should be traded in for more mainstream. In 30 years, someone will be laughing their heads off at what you're wearing today.

MediocreI believe this has a cult following but I found this series to be mundane at best. I'm spoiled by all the new fangled special effects. I enjoyed the remake so much more. I am a fan of Darrin McGavin and he did a fine job of acting here. I just didn't feel this series was worth my time to watch.

Even better than I remember it originally. As any series, some episodes better than others but more consitent [Much better] than X-files, which it is commonly sited as inspiring years later. Darren McGavin rules! Purchased mine used on Ebay for about $10 with shipping.

Love watching a show I grew up on. Brings back a lot of great memories. Darren McGavin was extremely funny as the newpaper man Kolchak. Although he acted very stupid he was very smart at getting to the bottom of a story. If you've never seen it check it out some time. Just for laughs.

Bring back my tween years!This show is a one of a kind. The true trail blazer and and first show of anything paranormal or crypitd. Still as good today as it was when I was 10. Fun to watch, great characters, and the campy-ness is still as good as any Indiana Jones flick. Low budget efects , but real suspenseful. Great buy and great to relive old TV at its best!

This is a great DVD of the original Night Stalker tv series set back in the 70's. It's fun and scary, and free of swearing and violence. You can use your imagination as to what's happening. Also, it is fit for any age group. We decided to get it because we enjoyed it so much when we saw it on tv when it originally aired. We haven't seen it in re-runs anywhere so this was the only way we could see them again.

I totally enjoyed the show when it was on television. I always remembered it as being good and I thought that Darrin McGavin was marvelous in the role of Kolchak. The question, however, was who exactly was The Night Stalker? Was it the monster of the episode? Or was it Kolchak?
When I saw that the series ( SO unforunate that it only ran one season! ) had come out on DVD, I had to get it. As I started watching it I realized that it was one of the very few older series that had retained all of its remembered good "stuff". It was interesting, thrilling, well acted, even hair-dos and clothing were not put offs. I have purchased quite a few tv series from the past that have been released on DVD and they do NOT age well. This one does! McGavin played the character as being so enthusiatic and fearless ( even tho personally afraid) in getting the story and getting to the truth of the story that I wished that Kolchak was real and that I knew him.

I bought this for my husband who watched it as a kid. It is so much fun to sit back and watch what is credited as the predecessor to the x-files!! To see a show from 1974 is hillarious and these are quite good!! If you are an x-files fan, dip back in time for this one!!

I bought this DVD for my husband for his 53rd birthday. He mentioned wishing he could see the series again. Being a good wife, I found a great buy on Ebay. He was thrilled, and watched the whole thing in 3 days. I can't remember this series, but my husband loved it. He says it reminds hime of X Files, which he also loves. He is an old series junkie, and this is his favorite. He was pleased with the quality and sound, not always good on old series dvds. All in all, a winner!

Things that go bump in the night.I use to watch this series when it was actually on prime time television, and I loved it then. It is a great blend of humor and fright, plus Darren McGavin is a wonderful actor. Some people may know him better as the dad in A Christmas Story. Each episode involves some aspect of scariness, and Kolchak is always getting into trouble trying to find out the truth. I recommend this to anyone who might need a nostalgic look at TV when it was really entertainment and not like today's version of all those icky "reality" shows.
