The Kodak Easyshare Z740 is one of the best cameras I have ever had the pleasure of using!

This camera has a little weight to it but is barely noticable due to the awesome design of the camera. There is a grip handle which makes handling and steadying of the camera without a tripod much easier. The buttons are in functionable places which makes taking photos a breeze.

There is auto everything on this baby! But for the more experienced user you can also manually set your flash, shutter speed, and other great features.

This camera is great for the beginner or advanced photographer. With options for taking photos up close, far away, at night, on the water, off the water, in museums, language selection, and a 1.8 inch hi res display screen, this camera just has endless possibilities.

Takes photos in high colour, true colour, black and white, or sepia! On the regular 5.0 MP setting you can print a photo aat 20" x 30" with out distortion!

You can zoom an object up to 50 times with the ten times optical zoom added with the 5x digital zoom! It is amazing!

You can record video with sound and there is no time limit (except of course the limit of the size of your memory card)

Using double aa batteries or the niMh rechargable batteries you can choose to save power by not using the hires display screen and just use the viewfinder.

This camera is awesome and I highly recommend it to you if you are considering a new camera!

Good effort, but lacks the essentials

The Kodak Z740 was my 3rd Kodak camera to own and use. Overall, I have been impressed by Kodak colors and image quality. But, I must say, this camera fell short of expectations.

The product is packed with all the advanced featured found in the Kodak camera line. You get several scene settings to choose from, along with custom programing modes which are nice for more advanced users. It has good exposure balance and nice flash range. The camera is solid, and very easy to use. The software that comes with it is better than the other programs bundled with other camera manufactures.

But there are some downfalls. First, being a high zoom camera is is more difficult to capture sharp images with the zoom extended, especially without a tripid. What lacks in the model, and is very vital to have in any high zoom camera, is an Image Stabilization feature. The 10x zoom is appealing, but without image stabilization it is practically worthless.

In addition, the Auto Focus was found to be extremely slow in low light or high zoom situations. Though this is common for higher zoom cameras, it was far slower than other models tested.

I used this camera for a few weeks, then learned more about models with Image Stabilization and flash attachments, which were not far away in price. So I soon decided to return the Z740 for refund.

Kodak now has a P850 12X zoom with Image Stabilization and a flash connector for about $100 more. Im my experience with these products it was worth the extra money.

In conclusion, it is a well made camera with lots of nice features. It is still lacking necessary functions required for this type of camera at this price range. Check it out carefully before buying.

  I am in love!

I am in love with this camera. my favorite feature is the settings for taking a picture "close up" , "children" etc. But the best part is you don't have to memorize what each little icon means as you do with most other cameras. All you do it scroll over the icon and on the LCD screen it tells you what the icon means and in what environment you should use that setting.
The zoom is to die for!
Plus you can take black and whites and sephia.
I am no longer spending tons of money to get my kids pictures taken professionally. This camera enables me to capture them beautifully!

  Great for the price

First things first this is an overall excellent camera with little downfalls. I will try to touch the most important ones in this review.

The 5.0mp quality makes this camera create prints that are better looking and colorful than the prints i have gotten professionally taken. Color clarity is sharp and outstanding. Taking the flashcard out of the camera to your local photo kiosk is a cheap and easy way to make your prints.

The 10x zoom capability is a great thing. It does produce fantastic zoomed shots but requires a little skill and patience. Some may review that without a tripod, it is near impossible to get a clear zoomed image. This is not correct. One thing that I have noticed is the use or the auto-focus vs. the manual focus and how they are used. If you can’t get a hang of the auto focus option, I suggest using the manual zoom. The auto-focus function is primary reason that a picture is not in the best focus point. This is usually a result of one thing, the amount of time you hold in the shutter button. Too short or too long and the focus will not be correct. Taking time and practice you will be able to get the correct timing down.

These days the use of rechargeable batteries is a must and this camera is a great example to use them with. Unlike a lot of the latest cameras, this does not take a proprietary battery back. You can use AA, AA Lithium, AA Ni-MH, KAA2HR, or CRV3. When the camera is purchased new, it comes with a CRV3 Kodak lithium battery (2 AA batteries in a single battery). This will last for about 600 images and 30 minutes of video (this was my experience, may vary for others)

Something that this camera is lacking is internal memory. The average picture is between 900 and 1500 kb in size. The internal memory is only 16Mb. This results in about 10-20 pictures on the internal memory. You can’t do much with such a little amount of memory so a memory card is a must.

Another small downfall of this camera is the video recording feature. This feature does work great but there are 2 problems with this. Once you start taking video you can not zoom in or out from the current position you are at. The other is that the video is recorded with a Kodak codec for Quicktime .mov file. Without this codec, a family member can not simply view the video on their computer with the standard Quicktime player from Apple.

All in all with the little amount of problems, this camera is a great deal for the price and makes perfect pictures that will last a life time. Hope this review was helpful. Take care.

If you are thinking about getting the Z740, I would recommended spending the extra money and get the P850 instead.

The Z740 IS an excellent camera, but Kodak improved it with the P850. My parents purchased this camera and have only wonderful things to say about it. From the pictures I have seen I will have to agree. My parents are both in their 60s and are not real tech-ies, so for them to be so easily please with it says alot.

But again the P850 is one step up. The biggest advantage is the image stabilization feature on the P850.

This was out third digital camera purchase. I wanted one with a good zoom, and this one has it! It is very easy to use. The pictures are clear and crisp. The screen is a great size! The only dislike I have about this camera is that it does not have the digital image stabalization. I had no clue what this was until I used the camera to zoom into an object with the digital zoom. Once it goes to zoom into something real real far away the picute gets jumpy and you have to hold the camera real steady. The higher priced camera has the stabalization feature and it would be nice, but considering it was 200.00 more than this one, this one works great! All in all a great buy for the money!

The camera is ok and if I had my time back I should of spent a little more money for image stabalization. What I like about the camera is the hi-res display, zoom , strap, glass lens, and lens adapter.

I wasn't impressed with the quality of low light photos. If you so much as brush anything off the lens cover it will come off. NO ZOOM in movie mode, your locked in. I wish I could turn that green led off when focusing or even recording a movie. Keep some electrical tape around for this if it bothers you or cover it up with your finger because most people don't like glaring lights in their eyes. Focusing is a little slow at times and the odd time it will not focus on close objects above the min. distance. The optical zoom finder has a mini screen inside, I would of preffered if it was just optical. The flash pops up every time you turn the camera on to take a picture.

Like I said the camera is ok but I strongly recemend buying another camera.

  Many features for the money

When I was shopping for a camera, I wanted something that was less than $300, had a good optical zoom, and high enough resolution that I could easily create 8x10s from cropped photos. This camera met all those criteria. The controls are so intuitive that not only did I barely glance at the manual, and then for only the more obscure features, but my friend's 4-year-old son was able to operate it, including zooming in, snapping pictures and reviewing them. Its LCD screen is not as good as its predecessor, the Z649, but it shoots at 5MP. The other things I like about this camera are that it can use AA lithium cells in a pinch, and that it uses commonly available SD media. This camera will last quite awhile before it beecomes outdated. I'd definitely buy it again. Kodak has introduced an upgrade with 6MP resolution.

3) ALso go to amazon.com and check out their reviews and sample pictures of this camera baby!

4) What metters most is customer satisfaction. According to the reviews I have read at may websites, it appears that 97% of consumers are satisfied with this camera.

5)The exclusive Kodak Color Science image processing chip helps deliver vibrant, accurate colors time and time again. Each time you click the shutter, the Kodak Color Science Chip performs an instantaneous and advanced analysis of collected scene data to identify and adjust multiple factors that influence picture quality. The scene light source is detected and adjustments are made to capture bright whites and true, vivid colors under difficult lighting conditions--fluorescent, tungsten, or daylight. Scene content is analyzed for luminance, focal distance, subject matter orientation, and color to determine the correct exposure and capture the natural details, accurate flesh tones, and rich colors you see in your composition.

  Kodak EasyShare Z740 Digital Camera
Review created: 01/03/06
by:
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for an easy to use digital camera for the biginner to intermediate experienced user, look no further.

The Z740 is a great camera, featuring an incredible 10x optical zoom (hard to find/beat for this price range), as well as an additional 5x digital zoom, for a 50x total zoom factor.

This is a 5.0 megapixel camera, which allows printing images up to 20 x 30 in. (50 x 75 cm) with little to no distortion. You can also record video (with sound) an impressive 640 x 480 resolution.

The Z740 had many user controllable photo settings, including a burst setting, portrait, close-up, and landscape (to name a few). All the user settings include a beginners 'help' description, which makes choosing the right setting a breeze.

The camera comes with a built in 32MB 'core' memory, for saving user settings as well as pictures you want to 'Tag' for printing or emailing. You can also leave pictures on this camera in a folder to show at your next family get together. The Z740 utilizes SD memory cards, so you can take unlimited numbers of pictures (provided you have the SD cards).

Battery life in this camera is nearly unparalleled with the NiMH battery provided, and battery replacement options are many.

Kodak offers excellent support and compatability for this camera line, including PC and Mac, as well as the Kodak printer dock lines. Kodak also offers a range of 'aftermarket' lense upgrades/add-ons for this camera, including wide angle, and telephoto lenses.

The only downfall I have found with this camera was trying to find a 'low profile' camera case...for some reason this camera does not fit in a standard camera bag. I finally found one by Blacks Photography for ~ $15 Cad.

To summarize, this is a great beginner to intermediate camera, with plenty of user controllable options and upgrades. This camera is sure to please, and will help you cherish memories for years to come.

Pros: Relatively inexpensive, easy to use! You can inconspicuously get up close! Batteries are easy to find! Has an adapter that will accept a wide angle or extra telephoto lens!
Cons: It will not fit in my shirt pocket!

This is my third digital camera. I bought it to replace a Fuji A330. I love the feel of this camera. It is easy to use and I like the fact that you can even find batteries in towns in the middle of nowhere. I bought mine a few months ago and had it shipped to my front door for $209.00. That’s the camera, shipping and everything. You will need a memory card - I bought the 512 MB Ultra II. I also like the fact that I can use my old memory card and rechargeable batteries from my Fuji.

This camera is perfect for me. I go to school at a large University and am the webmaster for two organizations. I am also the unofficial photographer for three organizations because I always have a camera on hand and take a lot of pictures. Members of the various organizations are always emailing me for a CD of pictures from various events on campus and conferences. It was difficult for me to get good shots of speakers at events because I like to sit in the back and to the side so I can check out other meetings. The 10X Zoom lets me get up close without limping up in front of everyone. My legs want to thank Kodak for such a great, inexpensive and easy to use camera.

So far I have purchased a larger camera bag, four more rechargeable batteries, and a 512 MB memory card. I have Quicktime on my laptop but a lot of my fiends and coworkers like mpeg, wmv and avi movie files so I downloaded a trial version of Alive Video Converter and bought and registered it later on the same day. Besides converting the files from Quicktime to another format, you can also change the size of the file for easier storing and emailing. I am now going to bid on a monopod and a wide angle lense.
Wow!

I love my Z740!

This is the second Kodak digital camera that I have owned.I am so very pleased with it.The High quality of the pictures and more importantly of the prints that you get from this camera are absolutly beautiful.I print alot of pictures and this camera has the most beautiful and rich prints that I have ever seen from a digital,it's right up there with 35mm cameras, perhaps better!! This camera fits your hand so well, and thats very important in shooting great pictures. If its hard to hold then there is no way that you can get good pictures. The Burst capture is fantastic especially for taking photos of animals or of course sports events...this allows you to get the picture you want.I love the fact that you can use normal batteries for this camera, not expensive camera type of batteries...this is one reason that I did buy this camera..because of normal batteries.I look at long term use and if this camera would have required a more expensive type of battery then I most likely would not have bought this camera. As with my other Kodak camera, this camera was very easy to learn. The pictures after taking are so very easy to download.I do not have the docking bay that you can use with it but with this program...you dont need it and that makes it nice to use also. The price that I paid for this camera was very reasonable.Considering the fact that this camera is a 10X zoom and 5.0 megapixels...none of the other cameras could compare in price to this camera.I really got more for my money and its truely a fantastic camera.I would buy it again. The only problem that I have with this camera is when you use the zoom in feature and you try zooming in really close from far away the lens gets really shakey and sometimes you really can't get that picture,if you back off a little bit that usually solves the problem. This camera really is a wonderful camera with great features and its a good camera for either the professional or for the beginner.

I was looking into purchasing my first digital mini camcorder from Panasonic. In fact, I had already ordered it when I came across this gem. I immediately returned the camcorder and ordered this camera. The video quality is awesome at HQ mode 640 x 480 30 fps. Yes, it may not be as good as DV quality but who really wants to work with DV tapes (the whole concept seems so primitive). Anyway, working with SD cards is so much faster and easier. A 1GB SD card can store over 30 minutes of video at it highest setting. So, I went ahead and purchased a 2GB to give me over an hour of video recording. Along with its digital video features, I also got a 7 megapixels digital camera which has now officially replaced my Sony P65. This camera is easier, faster, slimmer than my Sony and I love the quality of the pictures. I also love that I can actually put it in my shirt pocket and take it anywhere. In addition, I actually like the dock station since I have pluged it next to my TV and watch the videos and pictures on my TV. And yes, you can transfer pictures and videos via a card reader which most people already have (so you don't need the dock to transfer videos and pictures if you have a card reader for your PC). At eBay I purchased an extra battery charger and battery for about $25 and those generic brands work great as well (just type "NP-40 battery"). The only drawback has been the M4S2 video MPEG-4 codec that Casio used. Some video editors can't read the format without a video conversion. Likewise, it would have been great if Casio had included a video converter (like Panasonic's MediaStage and MovieStage software) so that you can transfer your PC videos or edited videos back to the camera for viewing. In fact, if this was possible, the Casio EX-Z750 could even become a portable video player as well (a la Archos or Creative Zen Player). I understand that AVS Media and VideoCharge will be working and updating their software to convert to M4S2 format. I can't wait! Overall, this is a great digital camera and mini video recorder for a great price! Casio is going to make a lot of money on this camera and will become well respected for its digital cameras.

NOT a good camera, needs work!
Review created: 11/01/06

This camera is not worth the money. I had it for two weeks and just downright sucked. I went to the store and demanded a refund. They said I couldnt return it unless there was something wrong, I said there was, its a horrible camera. They finally budged after I sat there complaining. All I got was store credit, BIG WHOOP!

The camera is not the greatest in zooming in on close objects, nor is it all that great far away. It does work well as a camera for an amateur or someone who isnt picky about their cameras. I just think that there are so many cameras out there that if I am not completely satisfied I must not have done my homework.

I also dont like the fact they advertise the easy dock system and you have to buy seperately. I wouldnt buy it because its not worth the extra "whatever" money it costs. Its not very handy in the first place unless you have no way of using the SD memory card. That wasnt a problem for me so it was useless.

The camera also does not have many features that many cameras come with nowadays. The zoom, focus and flash functions have become pretty advanced. It seems Kodak was late getting into the digital camera game and they are still a little bit behind the Japanese and Koreans. Well, so much for American made goods and hello to globalization.

Avoid Kodak at all costs. I sold this stock a decade ago because it was falling apart, I dont see it turning around to the power it once was.

I absolutely love this digital camera. It is nice for the first time digital camera user through experienced photographers. It does still photos and video. It has a small internal memory (as most cameras do), but does come with an SD card. Everything can be put on auto, or changed to manual settings for any and all needs. I would not trade my camera for anything. This camera has a lot of great features including these:

*38-380mm
*AF 10x optical zoom
*5.0 megapixels
*45.5-55mm Lens Adapter
*automatic: 1/8–1/1700 sec.; manual 8–1/1000 sec. shutter speed
*f/2.88–8 (wide), f/3.7–8 (tele) aperture

Camera has focusing problems. Needs to be exceptionally light. without this light, most all pictures come out dark and blurry even with the use of tripod. I personally would not purchase this model again in the future. You are unable to change zoom once begin recording in video mode. All in all, I would rate this camera slightly below average.

I use this camera for scenic shots mostly, translate great with the 5 mp, and so easy to dial in for the correct exposure. I love the 10X optical zoom, I can't see any loss in quality. Fits well to the hand to minimize shaking, quick enough on the shutter. 5 stars in my book, a CR best buy if you ask me.
