Bringing a story like this to film must have been extremely challenging and uplifting. What we find here is an extremely troubling, yet convincing story about a hidden enigma in time, written and stored away in a time-capsule for 50 years, only to be discovered by Son and Father, Caleb and John Keostler. Caleb's surprise from the time capsule turns out to be an uncanny, prophetic premonition about hundreds dates and locations of events that have happened recently in the past, and still continue to happen throughout the film.

The spooky phrase helps depict the pensive mood and immediate urgency about the following events within the storyline when the question is posed, "What happens when the numbers run out"?

That question that is posed, turns out to be the big surprise of the film. The the director that brought you "Dark City" and "I Robot", Alex Proyas has topped himself once again in futuristic sci-fi drama.

5/5 for complete and total genius. Thanks, Alex Proyas.

If you enjoy outstanding sound and blu ray picture quality, then this disc is for you. If you enjoy 3/4 of a great movie, then this is perfect. If you don't enjoy the last 1/4 of the movie being a downer and loosing what little credibility the movie had going for it, then take a pass or make this a rental at best. The storyline started out strong, the plot thickened, and it appears the writer (or writers) couldn't figure out how to resolve the issues, so they decided to go from an Armaggedon type thriller to a science fiction cop out.
It's really not a bad movie, just not a great one.

I like Nicolas Cage. This movie is forgettable and, awkward at best. I even felt embaressed as the directing was soooo awkward. Director seemed to connect the last fifteen minutes poorly and disjointed; even contrived.
Forgettable. If you like Nicolas Cage you will probably be embaressed for him as this whole thing could have been much better. There is an interesting plot. Could have been a good ending. Disappointed.

*~ KNOWING: A Good Sci-Fi with Great Special Effects ~*
Review created: 08/03/09

I wanted to first start off by saying that the Previews(trailers) that we had seen were AWESOME, and then to throw Nicholas Cage into the mix, made this movie a must-have! Then we just happened to stumble across "renting it", and are glad we did.

The storyline was good, somewhat dry at times. The ACTION was great, when it happened. The Special Effects in the action scenes almost made you feel that you were in the scene itself. I just wish the "good" scenes werent so spread apart, as there were only like 3 or 4 really good, blow me out of my seat scenes. This would have been an awesome movie if it was packed with scenes like they offered, but there were only a few.

Scientifically speaking, it was a very interesting movie and shows what may come of the world in time. Entertaining wise, it kept our attention but really didnt grab our attention enough to run back out and buy it. We watched it twice the first night, and it was worth it, but to own it, we'll pass.

Nicholas Cage offered an A++ Performance. And like I said, when there were great scenes happening, the SPECIAL EFFECTS were awesome!

If we owned this DVD, it would sit on the shelf, so I recommend to RENT IT first.

Overall, I give KNOWING a rating of Average.

this movie was very good! it took a while for the exciting parts to get going, but i guess they had to tell the background of the story first. i really liked this movie alot and when the exciting parts did happen, they really made me say "wtf!". very creative ending, some parts of the movie are predictable, but then again, it will keep u thinking and trying to figure out what is going to happen next. i thouroughly enjoyed this movie and would refer to anyone anytime.

Finally, a great sci-fi movie for sci-fi fans

Finally, after many years of watching the same old science fiction films being re-made someone has released a great science fiction movie that every sci-fi fan will enjoy

The movie stars Nicolas Cage (Next, National Treasure & more) as John Koestler, widowed MIT Professor who is living with his elementary school aged son. His son is given a letter written 50 years ago by a student at his school that was sealed in a time capsule. This letter is a series of numbers that Cage figures out are dates, times and places of events that have and will happen.

From there the movie draws you into the search for an answer as to why this letter was written in the first place, bringing up the question, why foretell the future if you cannot do anything about it?

This movie is both entertaining and is very well acted.

I personally love a science fiction movie and highly recommend this one to anyone else who does. I also recommend this movie to anyone who just enjoys a well written and well acted movie.

Rated 5 for 5 for an excellent plot, acting and a great story.

  Knowing - Blu Ray

John Koestler (Nicolas Cage), a professor at MIT, knows which side of the debate he falls on when he teaches his students about choices. Are they random or determined? Stuff just happens, he tells his class. He tries to live his life accordingly. When he's not teaching in class or taking care of his partially deaf son, Caleb (Chandler Canterbury), he drinks away his sorrows. He's unhappy that his wife passed away in an accident and has taken a passive seat on the life bus. Although like everyone, he wants desperately to know that life isn't a waste, his highest goal has become keeping his son "safe." If stuff just happens, he won't let anything happen to Caleb by keeping him home.

One day, something happens which challenges his beliefs to the core. His son's school is opening the time capsule a class buried in 1959, 50 year ago. Each student gets to open a letter from a student describing the future. Out of all the letters possible, Caleb gets the most disturbing one, a letter covered with seemingly random numbers. During one of his typical drunken stupors, John studies the numbers carefully and decides the same thing that Richard Dreyfuss did in Close Encounters: "This means something." Of course his confidantes all think he has lost his marbles, so John must seek out the truth in an alternate way. He finds a fitting colleague in the somewhat creepy, somewhat attractive Diana (Rose Byrne), who has a connection with the original creator of the letter Caleb opened from the time capsule.

This is a suspenseful story, part science fiction, part thriller, which will challenge viewers to decide what they believe in the aforementioned debate. And unlike the sensation we find in some suspense stories, viewers won't have to suspend much belief to go along for the ride. John's journey happens step be step, each event happening in perfectly logical order. Is John creating his own story or is he just following the steps laid out for him long ago? Much of the story is laid out in cold, muted tones. We see how cold John's life is through the lens of the director's camera. When the tone finally changes to warm and bright on the screen, and it is oh so glorious to behold, we understand that John finally knows what he needs to do and is able to do it with 100% of his heart.

The SFX are well done and the end scenes are beautiful in blu-ray.

  Review - Knowing (Blu-ray Disc, 2009)
