  Inspiring for beginning knitters

I was just beginning to learn to knit, and was getting frustrated when an acquaintance suggested this as a "must read." The writer's style is very lighthearted and personable, and easy to read. This is not so much a how-to as it is a conversation about knitting and knitters, with amusing anecdotes that made me feel much less alone in my frustration, and gave me hope that I too would get past my mistakes. It also, however, gave some very good basic tips on some basic stitches and projects, which actually helped me greatly in my first attempt at a hat.

The writer's love of knitting comes through clearly, and she made me feel like I'd joined a big insiders' club. I'm sure this book would speak to experienced knitters as well, whom would relate to the foibles she describes, but I would absolutely recommend it to beginners; she makes an excellent cheerleader. I will read her other books as well.

Read, Learn, and Laugh about your Knitting Obsession!

As a fairly new knitter, I bought "Knitting Rules" to learn more about knitting. This is a must read for ALL knitters, experienced or brand new to the knitting world. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee helps you to reflect on your knitting in a very humorous way. Why do we love yarn? Why do we find the need to buy and store lots of yarn? Is gauge really important? Are one type of needle better than another? You will find yourself laughing and learning simultaneously. This book doesn't just tell you how to but why. She admits to many of the short cuts we sometimes take and attitudes that we all have. She is far from the perfect knitter. This book is top on my list and I recommend highly to new knitters. Put your knitting aside long enough to enjoy reading about your obsession!

A delightful read. Comical mixed with informative. Con: I'm really not too interested in some of the details of her life. However, that fact does not affect recommendation for this book.

  Stephanie Pearl-McPhee Rocks!
Review created: 03/12/09

First of all, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee is just crazy funny. I love her sense of humor and how self-deprecating it is. I feel the same way about myself 99% of the time and still love myself too, which brings everything she says that much closer to home. Second, she really knows what she's talking about. Really. And she can explain it in ways that others can't. Fantastic!

What you always wanted to know and didn't ask because..

I like the book because the language is like a conversation with your favorite knitting instructor---to the point and pithy. If I could write a book, I would write it like this.

I collect things, like knitting books, vintage cook books and vintage road maps, among other things. Yes, I am a "pack rat". I wanted this book to add to my collection and it fills a nice niche that was waiting for it!

If I may be critical after the previous comments, I might suggest another cover for book and I am not sure what that would be. "Covers" are important, almost as important as what is inside---because it "seduces" one to buy. I am thinking of a "crown" with brilliant jewels of yarn and a ruler lying aside or beneath the crown; something "eye appealing" and "catchy"---perhaps, a teacher shaking a ruler looking toward a blackboard with knitting pattern displayed! I am drawn to books that catch my eye, then I look inside.
