The Kite Runber by Khaled Hosseini (2003)

Kite Runner is a phenomenon as far as debut writing goes. Add to that the iconoclastic status of being distinguished as the 'first Afghani novel in English'. It is a great story of love and redemption, written with an experiential style, and in a narrative flow that captures almost anyone who reads it; all characteristics of a great novel. Like most of the books that reached the great novel status, Kite Runner also did it by word of mouth. If you haven't heard about it yet, well, maybe it's time you bought a copy.
It is Hosseini's story telling through the child's voice that takes you on a journey to a strange land and time and yet overall familiar, and I think that is one characteristic that many great novel pull off.
