If There's One Book You Read This Year, This is the One

For those of us who are so busy that making a commitment to reading a book is a major challenge, fear not. The Kite Runner is the book for you. It's beautifully written with characters you are certain are real. You travel to Afghanistan pre- and post-war. You feel the weighty conflict of culture vs. modernity. But mostly, you feel a strong bond with the protagonist who's trying to make sense of his own life and his relationship with his friend, his upbringing and his father.

It's hard to believe this is Hosseini's first book. I can't wait for the next one to come out...

people have been attempting to get me to read this book for a couple of years, now I know why. This author does an excellent job of allowing individuals to get a glimpse into a people and culture most don't understand or know of. As a whole, I love the Pashtun, was somewhat taken into a family over a decade ago and feel an affinity between their culture and that of south plains tribes of the americas. Theirs has been torn apart by outside forces supporting individuals for their own ulterior motives who have hid behind the worse kind of religious extremisms to condone their criminal behavior. it touches the tip of the iceberg of what is going on there now as well as being a beautiful novel of personalities. Hassan is my hero, a true man who any could honor the main character is humanity at it's most vunerable, it takes him almost 36 years to grow up and finally become a man. Incredibly written with heart stopping cliff hangers I don't want to give anything away but reccomend this book above all others to read. If you don't cry you have no heart or soul

My experience this time was superior! I had been wanting to read this book, but preferred not to get it in paperback. A great bargain for readers of all types is Half.com, especially when purchasing hardcovers. Often, these titles released in paperback are available much cheaper in hardbound. That was the case with this purchase and with many others I've made over the years. The book arrived super fast, in better than advertised condition for a fraction of the paperback cover price! I personally find hardcovers easier to read and to write notes in as I teach many of these titles at college.

Half.com is a good way for readers to fill their libraries with excellent titles. I've been most pleased dealing with them!

I bought this book after reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by the same author. Both books were excellent. "The Kite Runner" gives tremendous insight into the private citizen's ordeal during the Russian occupation and later the Taliban command in Afganistan. The books also illustrates the "class" distinctions of that culture. The book helps to give the reader a different perspective on the people of this region.

Outstanding book. A must read. This is a beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys of different backgrounds. Their interwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

The Best Book of My Year!

This was truly the best book that I have read this year. I confess I don't know a lot about the history of Afghanistan to apply it to understand what is happening there today, but you don't need to for the reader to truly appreciate the characters of this book. We all have something from our childhood of which we are ashamed. This dark moment of the main character carries the reader through a book that will both break your heart and lift your soul. Once you have read it, you will be very, very glad that you did.

The Kite Runber by Khaled Hosseini (2003)

Kite Runner is a phenomenon as far as debut writing goes. Add to that the iconoclastic status of being distinguished as the 'first Afghani novel in English'. It is a great story of love and redemption, written with an experiential style, and in a narrative flow that captures almost anyone who reads it; all characteristics of a great novel. Like most of the books that reached the great novel status, Kite Runner also did it by word of mouth. If you haven't heard about it yet, well, maybe it's time you bought a copy.

It is Hosseini's story telling through the child's voice that takes you on a journey to a strange land and time and yet overall familiar, and I think that is one characteristic that many great novel pull off.

  Most Appropriate and Emotional
Review created: 01/23/08

This is a most powerful and moving story of friendship, betrayal and atonement set in late 20th Century Afghanistan. IT IS A TRUE PAGE TURNER WITH MANY TWISTS AND SURPRISES! The author's style quickly absorbs the reader and allows him to feel as though he knows the characters firsthand. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time and it will be interesting to see if the film version does it justice. A Definite Winner!!!!!

  A MUST READ
Review created: 02/07/07

This is by far the best book that I have picked up since Larry McMurtry wrote Lonesome Dove. The characters are developed to the point that you seem to know them, you also get a peek, however disturbing it is, of modern day Afganistan. Excellent.

This book was recommended by several people. It's about 2 boys growing up in Afghanistan, one rich, one poor. It's riveting, but made me so mad several chapters in that I had to stop reading! I was told to keep reading and finish it because it was well worth it. It was.

I picked it up without knowing what it was
Review created: 09/07/06

I am a frequent traveler for work, so I am stuck waiting in airports and on airplanes most of my time. I grabbed this book from a stand and was immediately drawn into it. I read half of it on the way to my destination and the other half on my way back. While some of the parts are graphic, the book is written exceptionally well. The book centers around two young boys that grow up together in Afghanistan. While their places in society are very different, they find that they have more in common than they thought. The book tells how life can change quickly, without notice, and that leaving your past behind usually means that it will find you again.

Maybe I'm just not used to reading a book like this, but I'm half way through it and I put it down months ago. It's been sitting by my bed ever since. I will pick it back up soon enough. Beware, could be a bit boring or riveting, depending on your likes & dislikes.
