Synopsis
In this charming, funny, and often poignant memoir, actor and comedian Gene Wilder describes his Midwestern upbringing, early neuroses (including compulsive praying), and first attempts at comedy as he tried to follow a doctor's somewhat traumatic orders to keep his invalid mother laughing for the good of her health. He recounts his relationships with a cornucopia of Hollywood and Broadway figures, including the larger-than-life actor Zero Mostel, the comedian Richard Pryor, and Mel Brooks, with whom he collaborated on movies including THE PRODUCERS and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. Nor does he neglect his passionate, complex, and ultimately heartbreaking odyssey with the comedienne Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer at the age of 43 in 1989, just a few years after they were married. With a characteristic lack of self-pity, he discusses frankly his long and painful recovery from Radner's death, as well as his own cancer experience with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma more than a decade later. Wilder's likeable personality--a combination of shyness, neurotic compulsions, and impeccable comic timing--is very much in evidence throughout. A remarkably candid confessional, KISS ME LIKE A STRANGER blends acute observation, wit, and Wilder's innate storytelling skills in a consistently affecting narrative.

Industry Reviews
"...[A]n honest, affecting look at his life."
Kirkus (01/01/2005)

"Honesty is a prevailing quality of this book....[Wilder] candidly explores his own faults and feelings, as well as those of the people he's loved and lost."
Publishers Weekly (10/18/2004)

"Introspective by nature, [Wilder] provides a series of vignettes that he hopes will add clarity to his personal search for the truth about his family, his loves, the choices he has made, and his quest for artistic fulfillment....[A] compelling portrait of a multifaceted man."
Booklist (03/15/2005)
