Kirby G5 Upright Cleaner

What I love about the Kirby is it is an outstanding vacuum. It is built from high quality materials and is engineered to pick up the dirt using high airflow and low vacuum as opposed to most vacuums which promote 'clean air'. Those vacuums use high vacuum and low airflow. Ultimately it is airflow that will clean a carpet. The folks at Kirby know this and have stood by a tried and true design when other companies, even the biggest, have experimented with other designs. That good old high airflow works the best overall in my oppinion because those other, bigger companies still utilize this design on their vacuums. One, inparticular actually went back to the airflow design for their flagship model after being acredited for pioneering the clean air design, on that very model. What this tells me is Kirby knew what they were doing all along.The title of this review says it all though, for me. My G-4 and G-5 picked up the same if not more dirt in one of those recent promotions for the latest model. I'm proud of my two Kirby's for performing so well. I maintain them myself because they are so easy to work on.I clean carpets for a living and can testify to the wonderful capabilities of the Kirby shampoo set-up. I always tell my customers sure, let me professionally steam clean it once and you can easily maintain it for life with your Kirby's shampoo set-up,it's actually gentler on the fibers. Nothing beats that shine of a carpet cleaned with a Kirby.

The Kirby G5 vacuum is part of the G series which began with the Generation 3, G4, G5, G6, G7 Ultimate G and Diamond Edition and the G10 Sentria. New Kirby's with accessories may retail up to around $2000 but purchasing used reconditioned Kirby's may save the purchaser upwards of $1500. Kirbys in the G series will have basically the same excellent performance. Unlike plastic vacuums with an expected lifespan of three or four years, Kirbys live on with the occasional belt replacement or infrequent visit to a repairman. Parts are readily available. The G5 is old enough to be reasonably priced, attractive in color (black cherry) and easy to find on eBay with accessories and shampooer. While the Generation 3 and G4 are also plentiful on eBay they have a slightly older appearance (shape) and replacement brush rolls(magnet in brush on opposite side to activate green LED)and motor hose ends are not compatible with the later "G's", although performance is quite similar. It would be expected once more newer Kirbys enter the used market place that G6 and Ultimate G prices will become more in line with the G5 making them quite attractive for purchase as well. Most attachments and accessories in the G series are interchangeable between the power units (part with the motor) so if a vacuum without accessories, the shampooer or floor polisher is purchased, the other items can be purchased without regard to which G it is for other than color match which does not't affect performance.

Since our 'old' vacuum was no longer working well, I set about searching on eBay for a replacement. Checked many web sites for reviews on brands and models. Decided to look for a Kirby upright. Won this particular one for two reasons - it was offered for local pick up and so saved hefty shipping charges. Secondly, the model had superb reviews. I was not disappointed. Though not the most modern Kirby, the G5 (with attachments too) outshone any carpet cleaner we've ever owned (and we've owned MANY). The pros: truly glides (helpful for seniors), deep cleans, TALL handle (don't have to bend over if you are tall), and the extra long cord is a bonus for large areas. Have not tried all the attachments (can be confusing without a manual), but the stair hose cleaner is exceptional. The only CON for the G5 Kirby is that it is very heavy, so hoisting it upstairs is almost out of the question. Overall, if you have always wanted a Kirby, but paying $1000+ turns you off (as it did us), check eBay for a real deal! RESEARCH the various models as some include features you may not ever use, and then again, you may want one with all the bells and whistles. Works on all surfaces (that I've tried) including outdoor carpet, thick plush and even tile floors. The height settings are easy to use and even let you know when you are properly adjusted for the surface you wish to clean. Definitely recommend.

This seller advertised a very nice Kirby G5 vacuum cleaner with all the attachments and the shampoo features included. I am already a Kirby owner and I recognize the value of such equipment. Kirby vacuum cleaners are unique in that many people love them and get plenty usage from them while others are intimidated by the suggestion of complexity. They are simply the best "bang for the buck" vacuum cleaner on the market. My item arrived in excellent condition with documentation from a nearby service center. The item is clean and looks almost brand new, despite the fact that it is nearly a decade old. This is typical of Kirby equipment when it is maintained and serviced regularly. I highly recommend the Kirby G5 to anyone who is interested in the highest quality vacuum.

I've owned a Kirby G5 for six years and never had a problem. It still performs the same as when I first took it out of the box. As far as I can tell it will last forever. I appreciate the G5's ability to pick up and hold dirt - nothing escapes its HEPA filtration system. And its carpet shampooing system is a really nice benefit: my carpet is eight years old and it always looks like new afterward. The Kirby lifetime warranty is also a bonus. What I don't like about the G5 is that it has no easy way to clean stairs. And although the bags and shampoo are a very high quality, those supplies are more expensive than department store brands. Also, it doesn't have an auto cord retractor since those wear out, but it's still inconvenient to wind the cord every time.

I always liked Kirbys as they last a long time, and especially the G5 as it has its drive. You can get attachments with the kirbys that make cleaning and working around the house a snap.

With 4 small children and 2 big dogs, we need a vacuum that gets the job done - KIRBY is that vacuum!!! I bought my first Kirby from a door-to-door salesman in the mid 90's. I kept that one for about 10 years before I traded it in and bought a new one. At $1,000+ a pop, and wanting a new one for my weekend home, I purchased not 1 G5 on eBay, but 2! The prices were right and I alreadt trusted the reliability of the vac. I received both in a timely manner, and they work as good as the new one :)

I bought this vacuum to replace my 15 year old Kirby G5. It is without a doubt the best vacuum I will ever own. It converts easily from the carpet beater bar cleaner to the hose and hand attachments.

This vacuum has the strongest suction ever.

The new vacuum is really clean and super nice. It has all the attachments for the hose and looks almost brand new. Best of all- the first one cost me $1800.00 fifteen years ago and this one cost less than $200 including shipping on E-Bay. What a GREAT deal for me.

I love the Kirby G5 vacuum. I have a regular cleaning customer that has a G5 and that is how I was first introduced to the Kirby. I always heard they were heavy and awkward to use. That simply is not true.

I would use her sweeper and then come home and try to use my Hoover and Eureka and found that they really did a poor job as compared to the Kirby. I have two long haired Maine Coon cats at home. It is simply impossible to sweep the hair up with my Hoover and Eureka.

I purchased a used G5 and I had already swept my carpeted floor twice this week. I was amazed that in using the Kirby sweeper just one time that I filled the sweeper bag 1/4 of the way. This was doing the usual sweeping with no extras.

I am completely sold and I am already considering a trade on the knewed Kirby the Sentria!

The only thing that I see that is negative about the Kirby is that the attachments are not on board like most sweepers, however, this is a trade off for a good cleaner.

26 years ago I purchased my first Kirby vacuum cleaner. It still works today without a hitch as well as it did back then. My daughter wanted a vacuum so I started looking for another Kirby. They are a bit heavy but they are built for a lifetime of use. I bought the G5 thinking she would want it but instead she wanted the one she grew up with. She said they had history. I had the vacuum before I had her. I have tried the new one out and it moves along the floor effortlessly with excellent suction even along the wall edges. This makes the weight of the vac a non issue unless it needs to be carried up or down stairs. I was very impressed with its performance. This updated model has a quicker easier handle detachment than the older model making it easier to use as a canister on stairs or in the car. The head detaches rather simply when needing to change to the hose. If this model gives the same service as the last Kirby I won't need another until the next child leaves home!

The vacuum is like new and runs smoothly and just as it should. I am very pleased with the product - It the first large purchase I've made on ebay and I'm very glad I made the choice and trusted the seller. What an awesome deal:)

I have to say that I was iffy on buying the vacuum for such an inexpensive price. I am glad that I did! I have never had a vacuum pick up the dog hair like this one. Thank you so much!

Just what i have been looking for is a great product at a fraction of the price. I took it out of the box that it came in and pluged it in and it runs just like new. These are some very powerful vaccums and they last forever.

Item was as described and recieved in time frame promised. Will buy from this seller again. I think I have said enough why is ebay making me type over a 100 characters

I recently purchased a G4 from a traveling salesman to use in my cleaning business. I love it! Only problem was I wanted another so I didn't have to unload to use at home. Unfortunately I couldn't afford the $900 I spent on the first one so I looked on ebay! Great deal! Great vacuum. I would recommend this vacuum to anyone. Changing bags isn't fun but it sure keeps the crud out of the air. Changing attachments is a little more work but they also work a lot better! I would recommend getting all the extra attachments including the shampooer.

This is the first Kirby I've owned since I was a teenager, using my parents much-older model... this model is amazing, with the variety of attachments(including a shampooer), and the fact that it takes
NO effort to use it !!
We have had all the other brands of vacuum over the almost 39 years
we've been married. This is the BEST one.
The basic reason I bought THIS PARTICULAR vacuum was the PERFECT price; much lower price on eBay than trying to buy it retail. The seller was GREAT - communicated well, and shipped safely.

I hate Kirby! It is the biggest, baddest, suckingest vacuum cleaner in the universe except for black holes! But like a black hole Kirby sucks up your money from the get go. Outrageous price! Accessories you don't need and never use.
The ultimate vacuum cleaner salesman sucked me in with promises that it would never break; we could abuse it and nothing would harm it - we could will it to our grandchildren since it would last for a lifetime! HA! It not only needs yearly service, it needs full overhauls every few years that cost the price of a normal vacuum cleaner. The bags are expensive, the supplies are expensive! When I bought it I thought, "Hey, I'm never gonna own a Rolls or Porche so I might as well get the best vacuum cleaner in the world." Guess what folks? The cost of ownership is almost as much as that of a Porche! It is a luxury item with product hype and costs to match! Get a regular vacuum cleaner - replace it every 5 years and it will still be cheaper than a Kirby. Do better things with your money...

Kirby vaccuums are the best that I have ever used. They beat brands like Hoover, Electrolux, Tristar--I've used all those. Kirby is the best and the longest lasting. They are strong cleaners with an excellent suction. It works great on carpet or floor. I am about to purchase another one and only want a Kirby vaccuum in my home from now on.

We wanted a good vacuum and this one is good. The only downside is that the bag smells of cigarettes so that when you run the vacuum you do not have the cleanest smell possible. but hopefully the problem can be eventually corrected and that's one of the things we deal with when we buy used.

They should of mentions that it came from a smoking home!!! It was dirty, and also disassembled to ship with no instructions on how to put it back together. I bought a G5 Kirby vaccuum and they sent a G6 instructions manual. When packaging the vaccuum, remind you it is disassembled, the packing used was inside all of the misc. vent, holes, filter whatever you want to call them.

Kirby is and always has been a quality product.
My mother bought a new Kirby 50 years ago and it is still running!
I like the fact that it is made of metal and not of plastic.
It is durable and reliable. It does a good job of cleaning carpets plus it has a lot of attachments that make it a multi-purpose machine.
I bought it to replace my Hoover that performs unsatisfactorily and Kirby enjoys a good reputation... Besides, the price was right!

This is one heavy vacuum. It is self propelled, yes but when off is just like dead weight. Other than that the features are great....
