Album Notes
There's no getting around the novelty factor inherent in a one man band, but when listening to the tracks on the two-dsic KING OF THE ONE MAN BANDS chronicling the career of Joe Hill Louis, it's easy to forget the dexterity and musical talent that goes into such a performance. Louis, a staple of the Memphis blues scene of the early 1950s, played a straightforward, highly danceable version of classic R&B. Although there were many musicians around at the time who delivered the goods with both more guts and more technical grace, it's more than a little amazing to consider that Louis was truly doing everything on his own. His harmonica playing alone is remarkable considering everything else he's handling in the process. Like the one-man-band itself, this collection is a bit of a one-trick pony, but a historically fascinating one nonetheless.
