Buying Nostalgia in the Form of Kid Icarus

Did you ever have an urge to relive some of your youth? I would make a wager that many E-bayers would say they have. The reality of this question is that we have that chance everytime we sign onto E-bay. Whether as a seller or buyer there are reminders of our youth around every corner. Video games, movies, nic naks, toys, lunchboxes and so much more are available to get our memories flowing.
Take for instance one of my recent purchases. I last played Kid Icarus, for the Nintendo Entertainment System, when I was seventeen years old. I never finished the game because it was stolen before I had the chance. As hard as me and my friends tried, we were unable to find the game at the local department stores or flea markets. Moreover, there was no internet, let alone E-bay available, to assist us. After time, I just forgot about the game.
So one day in late June, I was browsing through E-bay because I was bored. While searching a seller's 'other items' for sale, I found they were auctioning some items for a Nintendo Entertainment System. I had purchased a system on E-bay earlier in the year that allowed me to play some games for the NES that I found in my attic. I still was drawn into memories of Super Mario Brothers, Castlevania, Metroid and so many other awesome games. You have to understand, the power of this system was incredible. I mean, we went from playing Atari to NES, and that my friends was like switching from riding in a horse & buggy to driving a Corvette. It really was a revelation to in-home entertainment.
Anyway, when I snapped back to the now and continued to view the items this particular seller was offering, I got a second surprise blast from the past. The seller was auctioning a Kid Icarus cartridge. The same game that somebody robbed from me along with the satisfaction I would have had beating it, was right there on my screen. I remembered how hard the game was, its' challenging levels and enchanting music. I can not tell you how fast I placed a bid on the item. I mean, how couldn't I? After twenty years, I could finally finish some unfinished business. The only problem was that I didn't win the auction. However, I wasn't going to be denied an ending to Kid Icarus a second time. I searched for other members selling Kid Icarus and not only won the game, but at a better price than the first auction. The game arrived at my home in about five days and I immediately began playing it.
It didn't take long to figure out why I loved the game. Remembering the challenges the game presented was one thing, but actually playing the game was another. I sat there entrenched for hours loving to hate this classic game, sometimes even cursing myself for finding it again after all these years. However, after three days, I closed a chapter in my life from 1987. Kid Icarus (AKA Pit), an angel that could only walk for the most part, finally defeated Medusa. I sat there excited that I had accomplished my task yet still had to laugh. After All, twenty years is a long time to take in beating one game.
I don't like this game, I cherish it. It is a game for the ages. Now my five year old son thinks this game is cool even though he has a Playstation 2 at this disposal. Thus, it's charm has become generational. It's a great feeling when your child can appreciate something from your past and enjoy playing it just as much. Thankfully, it's a connection that E-bay helped cause.
