Album Notes
Smog: Bill Callahan.
This four-song EP is Smog (a.k.a. Bill Callahan) at his most unadorned. Even his classic lo-fi efforts like JULIUS CAESAR seem elaborate compared to KICKING A COUPLE AROUND. There's little for Callahan to hide behind here, telling his gut-wrenching tales with little more than his own voice and acoustic guitar for company. There's an odd tenderness to his voice here, and a vulnerability that he doesn't generally allow himself.
It's this fragility that makes these songs so entrancing, as Callahan draws you in to his own private world, obsessing over lost love and reveling in the role of poetic cuckold. The pretty melodies, elegant guitar accompaniment and romantic singing stand in stark contrast to the emotionally obliterated persona presented in the songs. The closest comparisons would be the second Palace Brothers album or Mark Eitzel's live solo debut, but even those mavens of melancholy seem practically upbeat compared to Smog.
