Movie Description
After tackling the truly American subjects of jazz and baseball, award-winning documentarian Ken Burns returns to our country's military history with THE WAR. His acclaimed 1991 series, THE CIVIL WAR, was devoted to the War Between the States, while this 2007 production pays the same amount of care and attention to World War II. Rather than keeping THE WAR on the frontlines, Burns and his fellow director Lynn Novick also explore life on the homefront in four towns: Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and Luverne, Minnesota. Keith David, who also lent his baritone to KEN BURNS' JAZZ, narrates this documentary series, while actors such as Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Lucas, and Adam Arkin give readings of historical accounts of those who fought on the other side of the world, as well as those who were fighting in their own way back home.

I must admit I am only half way through this epic series on PBS, and i am absolutely amazed at the brilliance of Ken Burns at the connection he makes between the story tellers(family and relatives) and the viewer. I had two grandfathers in WWII, and never had the chance to talk about it with them, even though it is an american based documentary it definately gives you a wide angled perspective of the world war in general. If you have a heart for veterans or are a relative of a veteran, this is a must see!!It brings you right into the homes of these soldiers and their sacrifices. It's worth every penny.

This is the best of the best. Seeing it thru the eyes of the veterans themselves and/or their relatives gives a perspective of WWII. I lost a cousin at Pearl Harbor. He was on a battleship. Another cousin was at D-day. His buddy walking next to him stepped on a mine. My cousin suffered masive shrapnel wounds--Never really recovered. mentally or physically. I remember Dec 7th. I remember buying US savings STAMPS at school with my allowance to help the war effort.(these stamps were like 25 cents.) After you collected so many stamps you would convert it into a $25.00 savings bond. ALL of my classmates bought stamps with their allowance. On Saturday we would go around town with our little red wagons collecting paper, metal etc for the war effort.
We gave what we could, a little money, and a LOT OF TIME. We could have been playing, baseball, ice skating etc. but our "Boys" needed us. God bless them all
