Synopsis
Documenting the life of an artist who has embodied the sound and the spirit of rock & roll since the start of his career is no easy task, but in KEITH RICHARDS, Victor Bockris conjures the essence of the Rolling Stones guitarist through interviews with contemporaries, documentary research, and finely-imagined detail. Bockris trails his subject from the squalor of the Stones' early quarters in London's Edith Grove to the elegance of Richards' 1970s hideaway on the French Riviera, unflinchingly describing his horrific bouts of drug abuse, some of which threatened the band's very existence, as well as analyzing his influential guitar style and noting that even mid-'70s punks, despite their public antipathy, privately regarded the Stone with awe. A chaotic force of nature, a contradictory figure who can be both immensely appealing and extremely dangerous to know (Bockris notes the high mortality rate among Richards' friends and acquaintances), the one constant factor in Richards' life has been his music. After decades of controversy, he remains a vital force in rock & roll, and an archetypal figure of musical rebellion.

Publisher's Note
A biography of the lead guitarist for the Rolling Stones chronicles his impoverished boyhood in postwar England, his rise to fame and fortune, his heroin addiction, his marriages, his relationship with Jagger, and more.

Industry Reviews
"Richards is one outspoken rock star who's worth reading, and this may be the only place where the bulk of what he's talked about over the years gets collected."
Washington Post Book World - Tim Riley

"Bockris re-creates the wild life of this rock 'n' roll legend with the voices of his contemporaries--the musicians, lovers and drug addicts. This is such an epic tale of excess in every aspect that by the end of it you simply marvel that Richards is still alive and still making great music."
Riley
