Keep it Together is another Guster Gem! Nearly Perfect
Review created: 10/15/05

Keep it Together is Guster's latest studio album (though Live On Ice is their latest release - its a live show) and shows a more mature Guster. Its an album that combines the essences of their past two - the rocking fun of Goldfly and the versatility of Lost and Gone Forever. Like the past two albums, Keep It Together moves from track to track with different tunes, sounds and beats. At its core though is acoustic guitar, strong lyrics and voice, and stronger drums and bongos. Diane is a powerful song that shows range. Homecoming Queen and Red Oyster Cult are catchy and meant to push forth the lyrics. Overall, another excellent Guster album that doesn't disappoint.

If your lucky enough to catch a Guster song on the radio you've only touched the tip of the iceberg. This is a great CD from start to finish.

We're Singing a New Song Now, and Everything Starts Today
Review created: 07/02/03

Pros:
Deceptively simple pop songs with clever lyrics and complex vocal arrangements

Cons:
Sometimes, it's all just a little too cute.

In the 60s, the Turtles created some of the most summery, singable songs on the radio - "Happy Together", "She's My Girl", "She'd Rather Be With Me", "Elenore" - these were deceptively simple little charmers that would snake around in your head for days after hearing them. And though the sentiments of the song were simple and sometimes corny, the truth was these guys knew what they were doing, and their songs revealed themselves in layer-upon-layer so that you heard something new in them every single time. Still, the Turtles, though lovable, are not often regarded as one of the more ...

Guster Can't Quite Keep It Together On Latest Disc
Review created: 09/22/03

Pros:
Careful and Ramona are unbelievably good

Cons:
the rest of the album...eesh

I was first introduced to the three piece band Guster about three years ago. Having formed at Tufts University here in Massachusetts, and having developed an intensely loyal fan base, Guster began garnering an awful lot of local acclaim from the two major Boston daily newspapers, who praised the group's harmonies, melodies, and their "no sticks" drumwork. It was that last part that kind of grabbed me more than anything. And so I took out their major label debut, Lost and Gone Forever, from my local library, and I immediately was drawn in. More than anything, the band's songs had hooks that...

"you can't hide standing under these stars"

Pros:
"Careful"; varied sonic pallette; almost immaculate in craft and performance.

Cons:
Stubbornly, not a masterpiece, damn it all.

I often dream of alternate realities in the music industry. Considering the sheer volume of acts that exist, available for consumption by average Joe or Jane Q. Recordbuyer, an infinite amount of alternate-reality scenarios exist. Sometimes, I dream that Nickleback managed one hit before fading into obscurity, and that Chad Kroger is now the resident a-hole in the current "Surreal Life" house. Once I toyed with writing a concept review of Blackalicious' Blazing Arrow, set ten years in the future, in a utopia where that album became a huge phenomenon and subsequently the blueprint for quality..

 Keep it together

Pros:
A different sound for Guster

Cons:
A different sound for Guster

I have heard from Guster fans of yesteryears, those who like the album "Goldfly" or perhaps "Parachute" that they are sadly disappointed by "Keep it Together." Although, having listened to this album for about two months now, I must say that most of their malcontent must stem from the fact that for Guster, "Keep it Together" is a much different album. While Guster is still made up of Adam, Brian, and Ryan, the music that is on this album is very different than previous Guster albums. Perhaps this could be due to the producers of this album, Roger Moutenot and Ron Aniello, and their desire to..

 How predictable, er, catchy.
Review created: 02/18/04

Pros:
Catchy and thought provoking lyrics

Cons:
Nothing special. average, steady, unchanging... verging on boring.

Being a veteran Guster fan from way back in the days of Goldfly and Parachute, it was only natural for me to pick up Keep It Together when it was first released. On first listen, I immediately noticed a disconcerting change from previous albums. For one thing, Keep It Together is, in a few words, notably "catchy." These are the kinds of songs that children would learn the words to quickly. Compared to Goldfly, where the tunes take a few listens to grasp, Keep It Together is an album you'll be humming from the first time you hear them. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but my main objection.
