Shortly after Nintendo released Donkey Kong to the arcades in 1981, a host of companies played the "me, too!" game and released titles which were obviously inspired by the level-scaling hit. There were a slew of those games, but they all had a similar theme. Typically, the player was on a mission to save some helpless creature and had to scale some sort of structure while avoiding enemies. Kangaroo was Atari's entry into the "jump-climb-dodge" arena of Donkey Kong-inspired titles, and it was pretty darn good.
