I have never read an autobiography (or a book of any kind) that has made such an enormous impact on my life. Mark Mathabane writes his own life story from a detached perspective and it is impossible to put down. One has to keep reminding himself that this is not a piece of fiction but actually the story of someone's life.
This autobioraphy is powerfully raw. Everyone needs to read "Kaffir Boy."

I got the book for my anthropology class and I am really enjoying it so far. I am only eight chapters in so far, but learning about the life of a family growing up during these times is very compelling

Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane (1998)

One fantastic autobiography! I could hardly lay the book down! Extremely well written and extremely graphic and very well described. If one doesn't understand "apartheid" then you will after reading the book. In-depth insite to the life of a black African boy and his family in a slum city in South Africa. Unimaginable pain and suffering endured in that place, caused by the government and the so called "police", the poverty, the hunger.Unbelieveable one can be jailed for simply losing their meager job! If nothing touches your heart....Kaffir Boy will.
