Album Notes
The best-case scenario for most soundtracks is that they effectively complement the film (LESS THAN ZERO, O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? et al.). But JUDGMENT NIGHT, by virtue of its careful assemblage of talent, transcends its source by creative slam-dancing leaps and stoner-rap bounds. What appeared to be a cheap exploitation of the emerging hip-hop/rock crossover trend turned out to be highly prescient. Inspired tandems like Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill, Biohazard and Onyx, De La Soul and Teenage Fanclub transform this collection into an almost avant-garde experiment, an angsty '90s alt-culture response to similarly groundbreaking comps like NO NEW YORK.

Editorial Reviews
4 Stars - Excellent - ...JUDGMENT NIGHT'S bracing rap rock is like the wedding of hillbilly and `race' music that started the whole thing in the first place....It's an aspiring re-birth...
Rolling Stone (09/30/1993)

...Tear down a few walls and it's amazing what tumbles out....
Musician (11/01/1993)

3 Stars - Good - ...[JUDGMENT NIGHT] suggests that the future for both metal and rap as a kind of agit prop soapbox style is secure...
Q (11/01/1993)

...can't vouch for the film, but the album is a MUST... - Rating: A

I never saw the movie - Judgement Night, though I am told this is not a bad thing as the soundtrack is the best part about it!
I came about the soundtrack having owned the Faith No More / Boo-Yaa Tribe track - Another Body murdered - from this compilation for a while before realizing there was a whole album of rock/rap hybrids....it is a standout album as much for the quality of tracks, the stellar list of musical acts and the uniqueness of each track!
Liking the FNM / Boo yaa Tribe track so much, I must review this first - it is a deep, intense, gritty piece of work, characterized by a strong beat, rapping lyrics, and screaming sound effects throughout! Mike Patton deep voice cna be heard in the background amongst a plethora of sound effects that simple makes this rock!
BUT!! Not enough to have these two acts, we have Helmet ( a very underrated banc) with House of Pain for just another victim, a fast furious track with Helmets heavy guitar rifts working well against the rapping of the lyrics. Teenage fan Club partner with De La Soul for a funky laid back interlude then Run DMC and livin colour grace us with a funk / rap combo in "Me, Myself and my Microphone".
Sir Mix a Lot....best known for 'Baby got back' makes an unlikely pairing wit Grunge band Mudhoney in Freak Momma, but that it the beauty of this CD...taking a strange combination of acts and churning out some killer tracks that as as unique as they are successful....and boy do they rock! Pearl Jam and Cypress Hill make another unlike combination - it is heavy on the Hill sound but you do see the Pearl Jam influence!
What more can you say - if you don't like the film but like rap / hip hop or rock, then please check this out! It has a plethora of talented and successful artists, taking different genres and shaking them up to form an explosion of sound!! This is an original genius compilation!
