Synopsis First published in 1972 to cries of relief from the sexually inexperienced and howls of outrage from the usual suspects, the taboo-busting sex manual THE JOY OF SEX has sold over 12 million copies worldwide. In its 30th anniversary edition, the helpful line illustrations of multiple sexual positions (which arguably constitute a pretty useful contemporary Kama Sutra) have been altered somewhat to reflect the times: though both male and female bodies are still refreshingly less perfect than that of the average underwear model, the male is now beardless. The text has also changed; there are now more cautions about sexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS. But author Dr. Alex Comfort's lively, readable prose--and his matter-of-fact attitude towards subjects ranging from armpits to the "x position"--remain. He proposes novel uses for the big toe, and usefully explores the many avenues open to bondage fans, as well as including a set of rules for the safe performance of such practices. In an age where the Internet has greatly decreased the currency of graphic sexual images, THE JOY OF SEX retains its freshness and clarity, although, as Dr. Comfort wryly observes, those who worried about performing some of the acts mentioned in the book's initial printing now probably wonder if they can achieve them at all.
