Joy of Cooking is THE essential cookbook

This revised version of Joy of Cooking is an improvement over the original, if such could be possible. It is simply the best reference cookbook extant, in my opinion. I can't imagine running a household without it, and I bought it because I needed a copy for my winter home, in addition to my well-thumbed edition in Chicago.

The most comprehensive basic cookbook ever. It has a wide variety of recipes, and all I have tried so far are delicious. The 1997 version is great; I find it very up to date as well as not skipping imperative steps in cooking.

The Cooking Bible in my Pantry
Review created: 11/14/08

I've had this cookbook since 1998 and use it regularly. Whenever I'm cooking something new, I look here first. The book provides excellent techniques, descriptions, and histories to most dishes. It covers everything from appetizers to main dishes to desserts in great detail.
My niece recently stayed with us for about six months. Her family constantly gave her a hard time about her cooking abilities. I gained a whole new respect for this cookbook when I saw how it built up her confidence and her cooking skills in the short time she was with us. Now, whenever she comes over she usually asks if she can bake snickerdoodles and immediately heads for the pantry to get "The Joy of Cooking". I've read that the later edition lost a lot of the cooking lessons that were included in this edition. For that reason alone, this is the book I've decided to buy all my nieces for Christmas.

I got it for my sister....and she is VERY happy with it. It is a great cookbook, giving recipes even for things most people buy pre-packaged, for instance, Spaghetti Sauce Mix, Chili Seasoning, etc.

I purchased this book as it was less expensive including shipping than I could find it here in Las Vegas. I love the way it's very descriptive when looking at a particular item to cook. I was very pleased with the promptness of the seller and received my book in great condition. Thank you.

  My first cookbook
Review created: 10/10/06

When I was a little girl, I loved using my mother's "Joy of Cooking," and when I turned 13, I asked her for my own copy. She bought me the updated edition as a Christmas present, and I have been using it ever since!
Now that I'm married, some things I took for granted are catching me unaware. For instance, I wasn't sure what temperature would be best for baking potatoes, so I looked it up in "Joy of Cooking," and lo and behold, the authors recommended 400 degrees.
Tips and tricks for just about any vegetable or meat, recipes for the sweet tooth, and helpful cooking info just fill this book. A must for any housewife! (Or househusband; my dad made us homemade pancakes every Sunday from a recipe in this book!)

  THE ULTIMATE COOKBOOK
Review created: 10/06/06(updated 10/06/06)

I love this book.

!!! IF YOU ONLY OWN ONE COOKBOOK, THIS IS THE ONE TO OWN !!!

Huge book ... Over a 1000 pages with chapters on every food item you can imagine. Initially authored by Mom, Irma Rombauer, then later revised and kept up to date by her daughter, Marion Rombauer Becker and now by grandson, Ethan Becker. What a testament to good cooking!

The authors have even included knowledgeable information for most products used, i.e in the Fruits chapter, the write up on pears indicates the variety of pears that are available, physical description, their traits, when to pick them, how to cook them, store them.

Exciting recipees are found with each turn of the page. A handy red satin bookmark embedded in the spine of the book, is also a plus. I have the new version and older version of the JOY OF COOKING BOOK. Happy Cooking!

  Could not live without it!
Review created: 04/18/06

I have several different cookbooks in my kitchen but this cookbook is a MUST! It has recipes and procedures that are very simple to prepare(like boiling an egg) to the extremely complex. Most of the recipes have variations as well so you can tailor them to your liking. This book contains classic recipes that are tried and true and has a very good description of the cooking techniques. I go to this cookbook first and vary the recipe from there. I think this is a must for any cook (and extremely helpful for the beginner). My only dislike would be - no colorful pictures of the food....there is just hand-drawn type images. But I would still rate it as my favorite.

  Great content but terrible binding
Review created: 11/13/09
by:

I have had one of these since it was first published and for me the international content made it - I was not interested in the traditional American recipes in the older versions of the Joy of Cooking. This is my second of this edition as surprisingly soon after I bought the first one the binding starting breaking down. I lived with the half broken book for many years and then bought this "new" one which I am treating very gingerly. Over the years I have seen reviews of this book citing the binding problem which apparently was/is the wrong kind for such a fat book. Unfortunately the next edition which is better bound took out some of the international recipes and put back some of the traditional American ones so is not what interests me. Nevertheless, despite a large cookbook collection, it is my "go to" cook book for recipes and information on ingredients and procedures and I love it.
