Journey - Frontiers and Beyond (VHS, 1989)

This is a very interesting documentary about Steve Perry, Journey and the road crew. I've been a Steve Perry and Journey fan for a long time and had no idea what the band and crew endured and experienced during their touring. The concert toward the end is good too. This vhs is well worth having if you're a devoted Steve Perry/Journey fan.

I had a Japanese import version of this VHS tape, then found this one, made in the USA---it's nice to do without the Japanese subtitles! Most of it is about the roadies & crew, and what it takes to put on a Journey concert. The new stage and light system that they created for this tour in 1983 was "high tech, state of the art" in its time and quite impressive. These people are loyal to the band and, despite the grueling schedule of a major tour, love their work and wouldn't be anywhere else. And don't worry, there is live concert footage of Steve Perry and Journey as well! Let's hope this is released on DVD soon!

Update, 4-16-2009: This is available on DVD now, much better than the VHS version. You get an entire concert, and not so much "background/crew/setup" stuff.

Journey was always a favorite band of mine from the 1970s and 80s. Most likely because the band was formed by members of Santana, Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie, and featured other excellent musicians like Steve Smith and one of the best singers in Steve Perry. In this VHS video, Journey touring during 1983 was presented in an interesting way -- by NFL Films. It also offered what goes-on by crew & Band to put-on the tour. Finally, there was about a forty minute excerpt of a Journey concert during the Fronteirs tour. The performance was good, but not as good as the video for the "Escape" tour (that was available in more recent years). Overall, I really liked the video, and makes you wish to return to the seventies and eighties.
