Journey to the Center of the Earth (DVD, 2003)

An excellent novel provided the basis for a good script. A veteran and newcomer cast worked very well together - Pat Boone and James Mason seemed to genuinely like each other, Arlene Dahl is as classy and beautiful as ever and the Scandinavian actor that played Hans was a perfect choice for the silent strongman. The underworld scenes are sometimes fantasy yet believeable - being filmed in Carlsbad Caverns as well as in a Hollywood studio. It has the right balance of science fiction, humor and drama with another unique musical score by Bernard Herrmann. I bought the DVD while it was still available and because the video version I had was not as good quality as I would have liked - a classic film worth seeing.

At least, that's what I had to do. They just don't make them like this anymore, and I wanted to find it before it dissappeared so I could watch it with my grandchildren. It's the kind of movie that doesn't get old. I don't think I have to go into the movie itself, but in my mind it's one of the sci-fi classics of that generation! Don't miss out before it's too late!

This was another one of those moves that i loved as a young person, i dont like the newer verison, it was a good family move & tat is why i bought it.

I love how the director,producer came up with all the visuals. I also wanted the movie because I was a teenager when the movie came out.

At the time it was made and for the age group who was targeted (teens and pre-teens) it was a fantastic movie with wonderful images and great performers (Arlene Dahl - at one time The World's Most Beautiful Woman - and James Mason, who can make being stuffy almost endearing).
These were the days of gluing dorsal fins on lizards and calling it special effects, but hey - it worked just great. This movie made a ride up a volcanic chimney on a column of fast-moving molten lava seem almost like something to add to your life list, and made a wall of precious stones my personal MUST HAVE. I ended up with many lizards in my yard and gemstones in the bank, and now I have the movie, too! All I need now is hair!

This DVD version has been digitally restored and the color rebalanced. There is dramatic improvement in contrast and sharpness compared to the laserdisc and VHS versions, making this release the definitive one. Highly recommended for fans of Arne Saknussem!

I bought this for my class. We recently studied earth structure and I thought it would be a hoot! Couldn't show the newer movies because of the PG rating (THIS ONE IS G), besides, it's nice for the kids to know we actually HAD movies fifty years ago-besides, James Mason is hard to beat.

This is an old clasic movie: Staring James Mason and Pat Boone. This is a sweeping family adventure film. The film is based on a race to the center of the earth. After finding a clue that indicates there is an entrance that leads into the bowels of the earth. Professor Lindenbrook(James Mason) puts together a team to verify the entrance. Along the way they run into another man (who claims to own the rights to the regens under the earth. Along the way they run into Giant prehistorick reptiles, Magnificent glowing crystal caverns, a fierce magnetic lightening storm and even the lost city of Atlantis! This is a stuningly choriographed film that was produced before most of the CGI affects that are used in most of the films now. The Film is a fine Family film !

I bought this movie because it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I have always been fascinated with travel to the inner parts of our earth, if possible. The adventure was awesome. The people are brave and have a quest to discover the unknown - willing to risk their own lives to find out what exists within the earth. I really enjoyed watching when an escape route was found to exit the depths of the earth via a volcano. And finally thrown from the obolisk into the sea and recovered by seamen in a boat. Truly amazing adventure. Just loved it totally.

This is a very good movie, especially if you enjoy the older sci-fi classics as well as I do. I enjoyed this movie much more than the new one that came out in 2008. So, if you enjoy well made classic movies this is one that I would highly recommend.

My son wanted this old DVD for Christmas so I knew EBAY was the place to look. Great price, quick, efficient. Happy with product.

We bought the new release of Journey to the Center of the Earth. It was very well done and most entertaining. Then I remembered the 1959 version that I saw when I was a teen. I went on eBay and found that the "old' version was available. We bought it and probably enjoyed it equally well as the "new" version. One thing that I prefer about the 1959 release is that it follows the Jules Verne story far more accuratly. Also, it is better for young children because it is not so "scarry" as some of my younger grandchildren put it. However, my teenage grandkids prefer the new release. All in all, I am glad that the '59 version is still available. There are a number of "older" films that I would buy if ever they were to be released on DVD. All of the Cinerama films need to be remastered and released.

The story is interesting. The special effects are great for the time period, not good by today's standards. A classic!

Great pre-animation/cg movie. Great plot and acting. Great movie. James Mason, Pat Boone and Arlene Dahl do a great job and great color in the movie. The best of the incarnations is this, the first.

One of the "extras" is a side-by-side comparison of the remastering....What an awesome job! Crisp & clear picture, with great sound. I bought this DVD brand new for $4.09 from Derby City Videos - (One of the coolest video deals I've had to date on eBay)...A definite jewel in my Sci-Fi collection.....

This had an excellent script. Even with today's modern special effects, it exceeds all expectations. Great Actors and a great actress.

Excellent movie love it as much as I did as a child. If you are looking for a true family movie that everyone can watch this is the one. Has excitement, adventure and a lot of fun.I remember my family sitting together having a family night and watching this.

This is a very good movie of Jules Verne's book. Very well made and enjoyable for the whole family.

This is a movie I have been trying to find for a long time. It is a old movie but very enjoyable. It takes you back to when movies had a plot.

I enjoyed the idea of this movie more than the actual watching of it. The sound is pretty bad with the music overshadowing the dialogue in some parts. I guess it's worth the price if you really can get it cheap.
