Johnny Tremain (DVD, 2005)

Bought this for my 5th graders. We read Johnny Tremain as part of our curriculum. It is a well done Disney movie. A little dated now, but well worth viewing and making comparisons between the original novel and the "poetic license" taken by the movie makers.

Great movie about the pre-revolution period. Contains a lot of historical people in the movie. This is a typical Disney movie. Recommend for people who are interested in historical fiction.

I can remember watching this in reruns of the Wonderful World of Disney with my family as a child. We all enjoyed it very much and I still do.

As a young man growing up in the 50's and 60's and watching Walt Disney on Television each week (and liking anything to do with history), "Johnny Tremain" was just one of those movies I had to have for my Revolutionary War Collection of Tapes and DVDs.

I believe this movie is not only an excellent one for just any collector, but would be a simple and basic introduction to any school age child who is just starting to learn the history of the American Revolution and the formation of this great nation. Although there are some battle scenes towards the end of the movie, I believe they do not contain such graphic scenes and details as some of the more modern movies of recent years dealing with the violence of the American Revolutionary War.

You get to learn a bit about real-life men such as John Adams, Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and others of this period. Also, you get to learn of such famous groups and events such as The Sons of Liberty, The Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere's Ride, and the Battles of Lexington and Concord and the famous "Shot heard around the world."

I would highly recommend the purchase of this movie for the reasons stated above.

Love the movie. One that I watched years ago in school and still love it today! It is historical to some degree, adventerous and just a lot of fun!

Johnny Tremain still remains a Disney classic. Great family movie with a bit of history mixed in. Follow Johnny as he learns about the founding fathers and What they went though for their freedom. The fight for liberty.

I have been waiting for a good price to come along to purchase this DVD. I remember reading this book in Junior High School and loved the story. Fun addition to any DVD library!

I bought this movie because I was surpirsed to find it on DVD. I wasn't sure if it was ever released on DVD and as a child this was one of my favorite movies. It's a very entertaining move but yet also educational at the same time. Teaches us in a fun and exciting way about a very important part of our history.

Being a history buff I love this as it's set in much simpler times and I love the time period it's set in. I think this story is based on a true account that actually happened during the British occupation of the colonies at that time. I've had this forever on VHS tape that I made of of the show when it was broadcast on television and have always wanted it on dvd.

Wanted to buy it to show scenes of it to my US History class as we learned about theAmerican Revolution. Great scenes available that corespond wonderfully with these lessons.

I use this movie in my eighth grade social studies class as a part of my unit on the REvolutionary War. The kids can relate to the movie because Johnny is their age. You need to ignore the stereotypes that comes along with a movie made in the 60's. If you stick to the story, it's a great historical film that shows Boston's dissatisfaction with English rule.

Loved the spirt of the book. The movie seemed really "dumbed down". Many of the key plot lines are completely missing from the film. Too bad as it takes a very inspirational story and reduces it to a cheesy disappointment. Not Disneys best work. Stick with the book

I bought this to share with a group of 12 homeschool kids, aged 8-13, after doing a pretty lengthy literature study on the book. I wish I had previewed it first, I would have decided not to show it in class. My students were put out with how many details had been changed and one nine year old summed it up, "This is soooo cheesy!" Definitely not Disney at its best. The book is soo rich, it needs to be read. But the movie isn't worth the time to watch, let alone the disappointment. Definitely, the book merits a remake of the movie.

The Disney movie about a "minor" figure in the Revolutionary War of the United States was a good history lesson. The characters were portrait as human beings with dignity, honor and thoughtfulness about what their part is during the beginning of the fight,which lead to our independence from England.
What I liked about the main character Johnny Lyte Tremain was his courage to do right in the face of adversity. He always tried to do his best and was humble enough to learn from any one. He didn't let vanity or pride stop him from learning. I feel the Disney production company did a good job at this. Also, I must give them kudos for the history lesson. The respect for the Sabbath during the colonial days. The research of the other characters on both sides of the conflict was very believable. Now, I want to do some personal research of my own.
Overall, I found the movie very entertaining and would give it five stars out of five. It gets you to think about the decisions people had to make and live by during those early days of the Revolutionary War. The great leadership of James Otis and the others of the "Committee" who have the awesome responsibilty of leading the colonies during those early days. I even felt sorry for General Gage and the British soldiers who had to follow orders of a tyrant and his ego.
The best part of this DVD was the Bonus portion. Thank you for including the remarks of Mr. Walt Disney, he added so much and reminded us that the fight for independence is still an ongoing occurance somewhere in the world.

Walt Disney researched this movie for historical accuracy, unlike his "MODERN" predecessors who stretch and distort Historicity for political correctness. Dr. Warren's retort to General Gage displays the importance and reason for the 2d Ammendment to the Constitution. James Otis oration in the upper committee room sends chills down the spine of any Patroit. Although Johnny Tremain was a fictional character, the movie displays the reasons for the Revolution as well as the events. This movie actually captures the flavor of the times demonstrating this country's Christian heritage. Unfortunately, this is one of a very few good movies produced about our country's founding. This movie is one of the cornerstones of my public school 5th grade American history class.Five stars +!!!

We were thinking about this old movie that we enjoyed as children.
It was a Disney movie, We wanted to see it again, and have it at home for our grandchildren to watch.

This a retelling of the early American resistance to British oppression, told through a silversmith's apprentice perspective. A solid Disney effort of the late fifties, without today's technology obviously. Well acted, and easily understood tale for the youngsters in your family. For the older, more particular viewer, one will find repetitive sets and perhaps a few too much musical scenes...but remember this is Disney and this tale came from ADVENTURELAND (if you're old enough to know where that is).

Saw the film originally on tv and liked it so well I decided to purchase it. Thought it was a good movie for the grandchildren to learn some American history. They liked it and have watched it several times.
