John Petrucci - Rock Discipline (DVD, 2002)

This DVD is very straightforward and easy to follow. That's probably the greatest thing about it. A lot of instructional DVDs feature famous guitar players showing off their chops, then saying "so that's how you play it," and you are left in awe and confusion. John Petrucci shows his techniques in slow-motion, and very clearly explains how to perfect them. If you follow this DVD religiously, you will end up with monster chops. There's no question about it. As long as you are disciplined about it, you'll notice results quickly.

I suppose that's why it's called Rock Discipline. It's not really very fun or entertaining, but it is a proven way to improve your accuracy and timing, and it will teach you new techniques. As long as you're dedicated.

I also enjoyed the bonus features. It was nice to have some John Petrucci concert footage clips, although most of the songs' full versions can be found on youtube.com.
