Jewels by Victoria Finlay (2006, Hardcover)

If you like gemstones and want to learn more about their history and the legends that surround them, then this is the book for you! It is a very finely written descriptive book that tells many interesting facts about many gemstones - from where they are found to the myths and beliefs about them passed down through the ages. This book is very informative for the gemstone collector - I highly recommend reading this book.

This is not a fast read, but is quite informative without being technical. Along with history associated with certain jewels, the author includes her own experiences and as well as information about locations, etc. (ex. the opal mines in Australia and the origin of Mikimoto pearls). The style makes it easy to read, but so much information makes it difficult to digest except in small portions. This is not a book for everyone, but it does make the background of jewels accessible to the non-jeweler.

When I read Victoria Finlay's first book titled Color, I was immediately hooked on this lady. This newest book is every bit as great. Wonderfully detailed with a fully researched history. Great personal insights as she actually travels to these exotic locations and finds out the true story. I do wish that it had a few more color photos. Stories and characters that you've never heard tale of before. A great book for the lover of jewels and history and early man passions. You won't be disappointed in this title.
