Synopsis
An Englishwoman is raped by a group of thugs on her way to a tryst with her Indian lover, and another woman--a missionary and teacher--is attacked and harassed. The reactions to these crimes by the various segments of Indian society--the military, the courts, royalty, and Anglo bureaucrats--provide a brilliant panorama of Indian life in the closing days of the British raj. This is the first novel in Scott's magisterial series known as the "Raj Quartet".
