Synopsis Hugh De Luc, an innkeeper barely able to keep his inn from the nobles who rule France, joins the Crusades in an attempt to get out from under the royal boot. What he finds on the road to Jerusalem, however, is much worse than what he left, and he deserts--only to find that his old life has been destroyed in his absence.
