Album Notes Additional personnel: The Impressions, Betty Everett. Chicago soul king Jerry Butler wasn't called "the Ice Man" for nothing. His cool, smooth style found favor on both the pop and R&B charts from the 1950s through the '70s, and the Vee-Jay label is where it all started. BEST OF THE VEE JAY YEARS kicks off with a pair of tracks Butler recorded as the singer for the Impressions, and moves on to such early solo smashes as "He Will Break Your Heart," which were also collaborations with the Impressions' best-known frontman, Curtis Mayfield. The collection follows Butler as he explores a multitude of directions, from Bacharach-David Brill Building pop ("Make it Easy on Yourself") to standards ("Moon River"), but no matter how far beyond R&B he reaches for his material, the Ice Man invests it with his trademark brand of quietly powerful soul.
