Movie Description THE JEFFERSONS was created as a spin-off from the enormously popular ALL IN THE FAMILY, with the Jeffersons originally living next door to the Bunkers in Queens. As George Jefferson's dry cleaning business began to gain success, the Jeffersons "moved on up" to a highrise apartment in Manhattan. George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley) was truly the black Archie Bunker: outspoken, opinionated, bigoted, and rude, he was known to flaunt his newfound wealth, and his mouth often landed him in trouble. George's unflappable and sensible wife Louise (Isabel Sanford) tempered his bluster, often chiding him while bailing him out of hot water. The couple's son Lionel (Mike Evans) was an engineering student at a local college. Lionel dated and later married Jenny (Berlinda Tolbert), the daughter of a mixed-race couple who lived upstairs--a relationship George often railed against. In the third season, the family's maid Florence moves in, Jenny and Lionel have tumultuous wedding preparations, and George takes up flying. Episodes include "The Retirement Party," "Bentley's Problem," "The Marriage Counselors," and "The Old Flame."
