Album Notes This is another excellent Starbucks collection of classic jazz taken from the Blue Note catalogue, this time emphasizing early '60s soul jazz with some prime post-bebop tracks (namely Miles Davis's early '50s cover of Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't" and Monk's own underrated ballad "Ask Me Now") thrown in for good measure. There are at least three outstanding tracks here: Horace Silver's Latin-tinged "Song For My Father," Herbie Hancock's much-sampled "Cantalopue Island," and Lee Morgan's masterpiece, "The Sidewinder," in which these Blue Note regulars hit a danceable groove and sustain it for a smoking 10 minutes, outdoing any and all R&B comers at their own game. Special kudos to drummer Billy Higgins and bassist Bob Cranshaw. And it should be mentioned that tenor masters Dexter Gordon ("Cheesecake") and John Coltrane ("Blue Trane") are represented as well. Monk, Miles, Trane, Herbie, and Horace: JAZZ SIGNATURES VOL. 3 is the perfect introduction for the jazz curious and not a bad refresher cup for afficiandos.
