Jason is still a hero.

Being only the age of four or so my memory of Jason of Star Command has been fuzzy at best over the years. Still the vaguest of images clung to the back corners of my mind. Over the years I would talk to other fans of Sci-fi about obscure movies and shows always bringing this one up. Even though the title itself had faded from memory the joy I remembered viewing it had not. It was described to others as "you know, the one with the space hero and his little white robot pal that always pulled his tail out of danger". Then with the coming of the internet my curiosity was somewhat satiated. It did indeed exist as I remembered and titled Jason of Star Command. So it was with great excitement I heard of it's complete single set release to DVD. Finally my curiosities were to be answered. But would I still love something so far in my past now the way I did then? With the first exciting opening the answer was clear, oh yes this was really that good. Fun, campy, creative, just the way my young imagination had burned it to my mind. Everthing just works for me on this show. The characters, actors, including of course the now well known Sid Haig in the role of the villianous Drago. Not to mention the rather surprising good effects for 1970's Saturday morning television. For any fan of classic B-movie monsters the stop motion space creatures that populate the series are a special treat. Of course this series is not without it's drawbacks. It was produced on a limited budget for a younger audience. All the pitfalls of this era of television are in play, but not beyond forgiving. So it's with taking all that into account that it really shines for me now. So much of what I once viewed as marvelous in my youth does not hold up now. This one does with room to spare. I consider Jason of Star Command one of those nearly forgotten programs that is kept by those that know it as a special secret. Well the secret is available to anyone smart enough and fun-loving enough to check it out. So I highly recommend giving this one a look. Sit down, relax and watch that space hero guy get his tail pulled out of danger from that white little robot. Nothing but smiles will ensue.
