Very unrealistic. If you have ever been in the military, you will know that this movie just does not hold water. Skip and go to the next one. Not worth the waste of money.

Well it looks like Menndes is taking another swipe at the USMC, heaping it on top of American Beauty's portrail of the surpressed homosexual murdering Marine. The movie is in fact boring. The characters are in fact one dimensional and give little or nothing to care about. Jarhead tries in fact to elicit some kind of emotional response the way Full Metal Jacket did, but the simple fact is there is no reason to care for the characters.
Now having said that, Swofford, whose book this movie is based on ( I didn't read the book ) may indeed have had a tough time with his duty in Desert Storm. But to portray the entire USMC or at least his platoon as a bunch of no minded, uneducated, untrained and stupid oafts is supremely biased at best. The portrayal of Marines losing it after only a few months in the desert, awaiting the conflict begs one to ask the question "how did our Marines and the rest of the military make it through WWI and WWII"?
This movie reeks of agenda, especially when the public needs to be swayed by Hollywood into their way of thinking. Go speak to a real Marine or soldier. Go ask them what is really going on. Use the money to send some books or granola bars to the men and women serving right now instead of buying this drivel. Or simply go with the flow like you are expected to and say this movie is good, even though you fell asleep 10 minutes in.

I love a good war movie.. I love a good action movie.. this movie provides neither. This is by far the worst movie I've ever seen with such a talented cast.
If you've seen the previews, you've seen the best parts of the movie.
Everything else is - more or less - just filler.
Bottom Line: Only watch this movie if you are having trouble falling asleep.

So, maybe I was expecting something totally different when I saw this movie. Or, maybe I was really tired and it made the movie seem to go slower than it really did. Come on...........how can a movie about a bunch of marines be slow?
I honestly don't know what my expectations were of this movie, and I certainly wasn't tired, so I guess this was just a VERY slow movie. The beginning was very good and grabbed you right away, but then it stopped and dragged on for the next hour and a half. I like Jaime Foxx and Jake Gyllenhaal, but even they couldn't make this film move along.
I wouldn't say this was a bad movie, but it was almost a chore having to watch the whole thing. There were parts that made you laugh and a part or two that got me a little teary, but as a whole, Jarhead did not do it for me. I know, I could have turned it off, but once I start a movie, I have to finish it - some weird thing that's in me, I guess!

This movie has to be the stinker of the year, the highlight had to have been the statement of hurrah!!!!!!!!. It takes you from boot to the Iraqi war on a very low scale budget, with minimal thought to the writing of the script. If a fistfight, and sniper training give you reason for your undevided attention, then this is the movie for you. Reality is this is an Ooooh Yawn!!!!!!!! movie.

Good cast, good story, not a lot of action. It was interesting because it didn’t seem like a lot happened within the story and yet a lot did happen. I guess that it just isn't what you would expect to happen. I was left wondering what people who were in Desert Storm would think of it as far as accuracy.

The first time I saw this movie I knew that I was going to read the book in the near future. It gives you a good example of Anthony Swofford's experience in the marine corps. If you enjoy war movies, this is one to add to your list of favorites!

This movie gets a couple of points because supposedly it's realistic. But come on. All movie long the uncharismatic characters are sitting there moaning about how there's no action, and how there's nothing to do. That's not very entertaining to watch. The movie doesn't even develop the characters. Then to make matters worse, the 2 hour movie ends, and still... nothing has happened.

Excellent Movie. Good language. Great for the kids to know what is going on in Iraq. My school class loved it. Very halarious scenes. Great combat situations. Cool training camps and good scenes.

From a personal perspective, Jarhead took place in a real life event, but the event was not the focus of the movie. The movie, if you understand war, represented the truth of war no matter how evil publicity has made it. War is not always about the casualties, but how the troops live on to tell their experiences. The comedy and drama from this film brings the realism of what it is like being in the military. This is why I like the movie. The only dislike I found was that it did not have the fighting from Desert Storm, but rather how one Marine grows up through the corps. If you like watching Full Metal Jacket, you will enjoy Jarhead as well, (same creator).

I really liked this movie. It is a little slow at times; however, that is kind of the point. This movie takes place in Iraq we know this conflict as Desert Storm. The story is about a Marine Sniper/Scout and his time in Iraq. It is a wild movie with many so-called "bad words" it is a vulgar movie but life in the Army can be vulgar so it fits. It is a good movie check it out

After having been in VIETNAM and KUWAIT,This movie brings the allowable views of our current times and veterans present turmoils in the desert instead of the jungles. Since some scenes were deleted or not even allowed,the presentation was as good to those who have never served as the VIETNAM versions of "The Deer Hunter, and Apocalypse Now". The version of KUWAIT of course being the present turmoils of our modern soldiers and the NEW Rules of Engagement. Most veterans can relate,Those who have never served may only vaguely understand for there is no substitute for real experience. A 24 year veteran MARINE/JARHEAD-GUNNEY/RETIRED, But will always be A MARINE.SEMPER FIDELIS,OOOOH-RAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Incredibly well done. Outstanding and underrated cast. A very pleasing performance and tale of post-traumatic stress and the life after combat. The cinematography is absolutely jaw dropping in this film. The scenes shot in the desert, especially with the oil fires, are truly breathtaking. The emotional level brought by a beautiful score really supports the perfect shots not in a noticeable way so that you feel forced but a natural way, so you feel eased and right. Something I recognized right away as I got into the film was the lack of political standpoint or message shoved. I felt like we as the viewer are given a very realistic view into a soldiers life and at the end are left deciding whatever political fate we wish. For a war film, this attribute is extremely rare and cherished. I am so glad that it was just a real story and not something covering up a motivation. I've highly enjoyed watching this film multiple times.
