Jane Austen's Emma (DVD, 1999)

Unlike the "Emma" starring Gwyneth Paltrow, this is not a comedy. Although the terribly senseless Harriet Smith, the exceedingly talkative Miss Bates, and the rude, arrogant Mrs. Ehlton are all still a part of this film, it focuses more on the upright, caring, though not very handsome, Mr. Knightly and the sweet-tempered young Emma Woodhouse. This version is slightly boring in a few places, but overall the very endearing and enchanting love story of two close friends. Four stars!

Emma is a very well done movie. Historically correct and following the theme of Jane Austen's novel very closly.

I am a great Jane Austen fan! She is one of my favorite authors. I have read her novel "EMMA" so it was fun putting faces to characters I have loved and to those I've been annoyed by. I love Victorian romance but it is sometimes hard to find a movie that is clean. Truly this is one to sit down with your daughters or have your friends over for a girls night in movie night and popcorn. No embarrassing dialogue or scenes. An overall sweet, clean, romantic, chick flick!

I have been a Jane Austen Fan for years. The language used in her books is beyond comparison with other authors of her time. This movie version is excellent, as they have brought this story from the book and still make it entertaining. I recommend this version to any one, new to this author, or a veteran reader of Austen.

This production is very good; full of intrigue and as with all of Jane Austin's endings......excellent!! If you're looking for a love story with all the drama, very well-performed, set in another time period where proper etiquette in society mattered much....... then this is one movie you must see!

I prefer this version of Emma. It is more true to the book than the other version. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes Jane Austen and her books.

This version isn't very good, would try other one. Giving this to my Library.

I love this Emma!!!!! Acting is wonderful,from Emma and Mr.Knightly to gullible Harriet Smith!!!!!!! The filming and scenery is absolutely excellent!! Love it!!!! -This is a "MUST SEE"for Jane Austen lovers!!!!!

Great romantic story, especially if you like "Period" movies. Beautiful scencery, great locations and good story line. Would recommend it to anyone who want's a relaxing, feel good movie.

A & E did this one right~ WE just wish it were a longer version~ LOVELY AND YOUTHFULL KATE BECKINSDALE as the Matchmaker Emma is great~ ANREW DAVIES WROTE IT SO IT HAS TO BE GOOD AND FUN~ the humor here is more subtile~ we smile at the Emma standing up the to the very serious Knightly (Mark Strong) who tries to reign in Emma's efforts but Emma moves forward in her plot to unite the local Vicar and her pretty friend Miss Smith~ (Samantha Norton) GREAT casting~but the ones who stand out are~ the very annoying Mr. Collins to the even more annoying Lady Catherine De Berg are perfect~ THIS IS A ONE HUNDRED FIFY NINE MINUTE MOVIE~ THIS IS OUR ONLY DISAPPOINTMENT~ we wish it were longer~ I GIVE THIS ONE A SOLID 10 OUT OF 10 for GREAT CASTING A SOLID 20 OUT OF 10 FOR DAVIES SCRIPT~ SHORT OF THE POPULAR PRIDE AND PREJUDICE BY A & E BUT STILL HOLDS IT'S OWN~
