Movie Description

As Ivan rises to power, he must cope with maintaining his empire and fend off the murderous intent of his jealous nobles. Please see individual titles for more detailed information.

Notes
Part 1, produced by Alma Ata, was made in 1944, and Part 2, produced by Mosfilm, in 1946. The night Eisenstein finished editing Part 2 he suffered a heart attack.
The film was made on commission, and the first part (with its kinder, gentler Ivan) was successful; but when Eisenstein brought out Ivan's dark side in the second section, he incurred Stalin's wrath, and, in 1946 the film was banned. Although he reedited sections of Part 2 to appease Stalin, he never was able to complete the projected Part 3, and much of the footage that had been shot for that film was destroyed. Some of Part 3 did survive, however, and reportedly makes the link between the murderous Ivan and Stalin even clearer.

Parts 1 and 2 are often shown separately. They are the last films Eisenstein was able to finish.

While this film is generally considered a parable of Stalinist Russia, in hindsight, with the information provided by the publishing of Eisenstein's own memoirs, some critics have suggested that the film can also be read psychologically, as a reflection of the filmmaker's own feelings about his family (which was torn apart by his parents' acrimonious divorce).

Art director Isaac Spinel worked from sketches drawn by Eisenstein himself.
