Synopsis
In the year 1864, two separate ships crashed into the shallow reefs along the coast of the remote and uninhabited Aukland Islands. The marooned crews of the two ships never encountered each other and their experiences were drastically different. One crew, under the leadership of Captain Thomas Musgrave, prayed, played chess, built a cabin and eventually a ship. The other crew's captain went mad and his men soon resorted to murder and cannibalism. However, members of both crews survived to tell the tale, and using these remarkable documents Joan Druett has written a harrowing book that provides insight into techniques of survival and the unequal fiber of men.
