MY REVIEW:
I remember reading the book 'The Island of the blue dolphins' when I was just a Keiki(Child). I was a 5th grader attending Kalanianaole Elementary School on the beautiful island of Hawaii. Because I was a student in Hawaii, our teachers tried to get us interested in books that had an island feel to it. I found this book to be absolutely great! Although this book did not take place in Hawaii, it had so many details that reminded me of my island home. From the sand and sea to the ships and the animals, this book definitely has a Hawaiian island feel to it.
WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:
This book is about a young girl that gets left behind as her family and tribe sail off with visitors from far away. She has no choice but to do whatever it takes to survive on this stranded island all alone. She has to fight wild animals and find a way to feed and protect herself.
BOOK AWARDS:
Island of the Blue Dolphins is based on a true story and has won the Newbery Award.
AGE RECOMMENDATIONS:
I loved reading this book as a child so much that I shared it with my 7 year old daughter who absolutely loved it too!
I first read this book when I was about 10 years old. I tried to read it to my daughter when she was 5 but it didn't have enough pictures to keep her interested. I tried again when she was 6 but she still wasn't completly interested. I tried again when she was 7 years old and now she loves it. I would say that children 7 and up would enjoy this book. I've read it several times on my own as well. Hope you enjoy it too!
Aloha from Hawaii!!!
