We had to read this for school and it is a good book. I think the ending was too quick and why would the people not come back to rescue Karana until 18 years later. The book is good and I think anyone who likes to read/watch survival things should get this book. Good buy!!

  Island of the Blue Dolphins

This is a quality classic based on a true story of a young girl shipwrecked on an island. I read it to my grandsons and they loved it. So, I purchased a copy for my granddaughter to read. Unlike many books published today, this young girl remains innocent but grows into maturity through a myriad of trials and emerges victorious. Should be mandatory reading for grade 3 and up. Parents can feel safe about the contents of this book.

  Great book for all ages!
Review created: 03/05/08

This book is a fun book to read no matter what age you are. I first read this as a child and remembered it and after reading it again 15 years later was still unable to put the book down. It is a courageous story about a very strong young woman, who stays on the island where her tribe lived when the rest of her people left on a ship. Her young brother was left behind and when seeing him running along the cliffs from the ship Won-a-Pei-Lei (Karana) flings herself into the ocean to be with her brother. Shortly after her brother is killed by a pack of wild dogs, Karana vows to kill every one of the scavengers to avenge her young brothers death. She makes a home, and comfortably lives on the island in solitary for many years.
