Synopsis
Economist Robert Schiller yanks the leashes of investors gone wild, as he soberly assesses the true value of the stock market and warns of the risks that come from relying too much on markets that are volatile and subject to many psychological forces. The phrase "irrational exuberance" is credited to Alan Greenspan, but Schiller's book, first published in 2000, seemed right on target when the stock market took a dive just after its publication. An academic, Schiller writes here for the layperson, and is a good explainer of both complex and common-sense market factors.

Publisher's Note
An expert on market volatility offers a timely updated edition of his best-selling study that shows that the value of the stock market may be significantly inflated and urges cautious optimism, predicting that the market may show poorer performance in the future.

Industry Reviews
"Yale economist Robert Shiller is well known in scholarly circles for stressing the importance of psychology in financial markets....In [this book], Mr. Shiller describes this work in layman's terms and presents a clear exposition of the psychological and often irrational influences in financial markets....[His] book offers a dose of realism...that serious investors will ignore at their peril."
Malkiel

"[The] first 168 pages are must reading for anyone with savings invested in stocks."
Uchitelle

"...Shiller is depressingly convincing."
Wolfe

"[Schiller] draws a wholly convincing picture of how investors behave, and how, despite high motivation, intelligence and care, they will systematically go atsray, which not only conforms to lay intuition, but is rigorously supported by analysis."
Times Literary Supplement - Jeremy Hardie (04/20/2001)
