Movie Description The long history of Irish-Americans is chronicled in this special four-part documentary originally seen on PBS. Part one covers Ireland's history leading up to the great Potato Famine of the 1840s that starved thousands and led millions to journey across the ocean to new beginnings in America. Part two tracks the new immigrants as they arrived in America and the challenges they faced as they spread across the nation. Part three looks at the "golden age" of Irish immigrants as they contribute to American culture and politics, culminating in Al Smith's 1928 run for President. Finally, part four looks at the Irish experience in the twentieth century, focusing on the Kennedy and O'Neill clans. This documentary features interviews with renowned Irish Americans and historians and great music from such musicians as Elvis Costello, The Chieftains, and much more.
