  HipZip Battery DOA!
Review created: 06/07/08

I bought this hoping it would work, but the Li ion battery is DOA and the item will not work, charge, or display anything on screen. It will power up when connected to a USB port and show up as a 40 mbyte removable drive when a 40 mbyte Clik! disk is inserted. These batteries apparently die with age and can not be found when Googled! Good luck.

Good on paper; so-so on execution.

This player is what I call "third Gen" mp3 player. Good player in its days, but didn't catch on or improved upon.

The Good: Good sound quality - it's not as good as ipods, but can be loud without any distortions. This player is also tough compaired to other player. Also it's had an interchangable disk system that allow flexablity.

The Bad: Batteries life is rather limited since it ran on so-so quality internal lith-ion. Also since this player runs on hipzip 40meg media and it limits to about 8 to 9 128s mp3's. This unit is pretty heavy compaired to the same generation players.

The REALLY REALLY UGLY: Not reliable media - the Hipzip 40 diskettes tends to last about in 6 months of daily usage. Also, because it used diskettes, you have to carry and extra bag just to get your tunes on a long trip; Changing the disks while driving required training... especially if your car's shortgun seat had been taken. Did I mentioned the diskettes are hard to find and expensive?

Bottomline - you might want to get this player for around $10 or so and don't mind the disks changing routine... This might be a good player for you. Although I would stockpile the media just in case.

HipZip does work if you give it a good charge

I purchased a Hip Zip almost 10 years ago, and it was lost in a cross-country move. I came across this refurbished unit and thought I would take a chance and see if it was as good as I remembered. I had the old pocket zip disks in a junk drawer and took one out and was plesantly surprised to hear some of my oldies I had recorded years ago...The HipZip had to be recharged for 8 hours first before it worked.
Some earlier reviews stated their units were DOA. The old user manual warns you not to allow the unit to discharge over a long period without recharging every so often, It pays to read instructions!

I deal in used MP3 players and these sounded neat. They were well represented and have no problem with our deal.

I bought this MP3 player as a christmas present for teenage grandson.
I liked the fact this came with extra disks, manual and extra equipment such as leather case and headphones. One of the extra disks already had his favorite group already on it. I'm sure he is going to just love it!!
